HENRY DE BOER, OF SYRACUSE, NEW-YORK..
SHORT 1min ron BEnsTEADs.
Specication of Letters Patent.
rammed May 2, 191i.
Application tiled .Tuly 20, 1910. Serial No. 572,930.
` To all whom it may concern:
`Be it known that I, HENRY DE Bonn, a' cltizen of the United States, anda resident of Syracuse, -ini'thecounty of Onondaga,
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ShortRails for Bedsteads, of which'the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the" accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is af side elevation showing the foot board and head board of a bedsteadfastened together. with my improved bed rails; Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal sectionall View thereof, somewhat enlarged as compared with Fig. l; Fig. 3 a 'horizontal sectional view thereof; Fig. 4 is a transverse Vertical sectional view.
This invention has relation to that class-of bedstead side rails which are made short in 'length for the purpose simply of temporarily locking the foot boa-rd and head board y together in their nat-ural upright positions for use in the show-room, and the object of this invention is to provide a simple device adapted especially for use with wooden bedsteads, as more fully hereinafter set forth.'
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, a designatesa substantial rectangular frame, which can be made of wood or metal which constitutes the .body of the.
short rail. The end pieces b o'f this frame are' square and fiat to adapt them for solid abutment against the vertical faces' of the legs of the foot and head boards. 'In each end piece is a cent-ral slot c and extending through each of these slots is the shank of a hook cl Whose inner ends are screw threaded-in op positedireotions'and are connected by a turn buckle e, this turn buckle being supported centrally within the frame of the short rail. The hooks d project beyond the ends of the short rail and have their open throats facing downwardly. By means of the turn buckle these hooks may be simultaneously drawn inwardly toward the respective faces of the ends of the rail ,or may be moved outwardly therefrom, as is obvious.
The manner of using this device is shown clearly in Fig. 2. In use the hooks d 'extend into the usual slots in the legs of the bed and engage over the transverse pins f extending across said slots, and by rotating `the turn buckle the distance between the hooks may be shortened to thus clamp the legs tirmly against the flat end Walls of the short rail and thus hold the foot-board and the head-board solidly together in an upn4 rightposition. In removing the device it is simply necessary to loosen the turn vbuckle sufficiently to enable the hooks tobe lifted ofi" the ns f, whereupon' the device maybe .l
detached bysimply lifting the. rail suiiiciently to disconnect the'hooksl from the` 'nsi It will be observed that thefshanks o? the hooks are `flat and that the holes in the ends of the' rail-frame are similarly shaped so that the .Shanks shall be prevented from ro tating inthe holes/and thus maintain both.
hooks in a downwardly facingpositio'n. It will be further observed that the lower ends of the slots care each enlarged, as at c',
whereby the cylindrical inner threaded endsV `of the hooks may be inserted as well as withdrawn from the slots, and in order to prevent the fiat portions of .the hooks dropping down into these enlarged portions o-f the slot, a nail or ping may be inserted in the end walls ofthe frame a directly under the hooks, these Having thus described my invention, what pins vor nails being readilyl removable.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Lct ters Patent, is-` 1. In a side rail for bedsteads, .an open rail havin a hole in each of `its end walls,
a pair of ownwardly turned hooks having their Shanks extended inwardly through` they engage the slots and being threaded at thelr inner ends within' the frame and having their outer hook ends, facingy downwardly, and a turn-buckle connecting the inner ends 4of the hook'swithin' the frame, substantially as set forth. 1
3. A device ,of the character described,
comprising -a short-rail provided with a central. aperture an leading from sai central aperture, rods longitudinal apertures mounted within sid apertures, the outer ends of said rods being bent and' adapted to be secured in the Socket piecesof a bed, and a'turnbuckle connecting the inner ends of said rods.
. leading from A device of the character described, comprising a short rail provided with a central aperture and longitudinal apertures said aperture, a rod mounted within each of said longitudinal apertures and extending into the centralaperture, the outer ends of said rods` being provided with means for engagement in the socket pieces of a bed, and screw means connecting the ends of the rods Within the central aperture to draw them toward each other, for the purpose set forth.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a short 4rail provided with a central aperture and longitudinal apertures leadingy from said aperture7 a rod mounted Within each of said longitudinal apertures and extending into the central aperture, the outer ends of said rods being provided with means for engagement in the socket'pieces of a bed, and screw means drawing the rods inwardly.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses this 11 day of July 1910.
HENRY DE BOER.
