CLAMPING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALANDo L. BLODGETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clamping devices, and has for its object the provision of means whereby the act of clamping together two or more objects may be effected in an easy and rapid manner.
A further object of the present invention resides in the particular form of struc ture, whereby a clamping device capable of withstanding great strain, and consequently capable of imparting a great binding force is produced.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means in a clamping de vice, whereby the binding force, which may be applied by its use, will be uniformly distributed over a wide clamping surface, so that objects of considerable length may be firmly clamped to a fixed member, and held against torsional strain by the use of a single clamping device.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter described and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings employed for illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, with the clamping means open. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, showing the clamping means closed, with objects clamped together, represented by dotted lines; and, Fig. 3 is a top view thereof when in the position shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 5 indicates the body of the device, substantially U -shaped in cross-section, the spaced members 6 and 7 constituting jaws, into the opening between which the objects to be clamped together are inserted. otally mounted upon a rod 8, which is journaled in the jaw 7 near its free end, and the ends of which extend beyond the outer end faces of the jaw, is a U-shaped clamping member, the ends of which terminate in cam members 10, having apertures 11 located out of center to receive the ends of the rod 8. The bar 12 connecting the arms 13 of the clamping member serves as a handle with which the cam members 10 are simultaneously operated. hen the clamping member is in closed position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the handle portion thereof, comprising the bar 12 and side arms 13, straddles the body of the clamp in close relation, so as to form a neat and compact device, with no protruding parts. When fully closed the bearing points 14, of the cam members 10, are on a line with their pivotal point or over center, so that the cam will be locked against accidental movement.
In order to obtain great strength for the body portion of the clamp with a minimum of weight, the same is provided with a plurality of ribs 15, formed integral therewith in casting the body, and extending entirely about the outer sides thereof.
The present clamping device is especially designed for the purpose of clamping scraper blades to floor dressing machines, in order that such blades may be easily and quickly removed for sharpening, and as easily and quickly replaced. As such blades are of considerable length, and in order to avoid the necessity of using a multiplicity of clamping devices, the clamp is provided with jaws having a broad contact surface, which, with the double clamping members permits a uniform clamping force to be applied over a wide area, and a scraping blade or other article of comparatively large size to be securely clamped to other objects by the use of a single clamping device.
