UNTTED @TAT OF ROCHESTER, NEW/V YORK, ASSIGNOR TO TAYLOR INSTRUMENT HERBERT J. WINN,
COMPANIES, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A. CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
RECEPTACLE OR CASE FOR THERMOMETERS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, rear.
Application filed. March 29, 1910. Serial No. 552,152.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT J. WINN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles or Cases for Thermometers and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon,
The present invention relates to receptacles or cases for thermometers or other instruments or devices adapted to be carried in the pocket of a user; and it has for an ob ject to provide a device having the dual functions of a retaining device for the closure of the receptacle and a clasp for securing the receptacle within the pocket of the user.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case or receptacle closure; Fig. 2 is a like view showing the closure opened and swung to one side to permit the removal of the thermometer or other instrument contained therein; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the receptacle with the thermometer arranged therein.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a casing or container and 2 a closure which in this instance is in the form of a cap adapted to slide over the open end of the container.
With the object in view of retaining the cap against loss, one of the parts of the receptacle, in this instance the cap, is provided with a guide 3 preferably in the form of a rod of circular cross section, extending longitudinally of the receptacle and having one end secured at 4 to the closure 2 and an ofiset 5 permitting the greater portion of the rod to lie in spaced relation to the container or casing 1. Cooperating with the guide 3 is a guide i which in this instance is in the form of a sleeve surrounding the guide 3 and permitting the latter to move longitudinally of the casing with the cap 2 and also to turn in order that the cap may be swung out of alinement with the casing 1 to facilitate the introduction or removal of the thermometer or other instrument 6.
In order that the guide member 3 may also be utilized for securing the receptacle within the pocket of the user, it is provided at its lower or outer end with a device, such as an enlargement 7, preferably of inverted pear shape, for cooperation with the exterior of the casing 1 to clasp the wall of the garment pocket between the casing and the enlargement 7, the guide member 3 preferably being formed of resilient material so that it may bend slightly transversely of its length and have a normal tendency to engage with the exterior of the casing. The pear shape formation of the enlargement facilitates its engagement with the pocket wall.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the cap is always retained with the container casing 1 and is thus not liable to be mislaid or lost. It may be opened easily and shifted or swung out of alinement with the casing 1 so that the instrument or device within the casing 1 may be removed. The guide which allows these movements has provision at its free end for retaining the receptacle within the pocket of the user and this retaining device also acts as a stop by engagement with the lower end of the sleeve 4: to prevent the entire disconnection of the cap with the casing.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a pocket receptacle, the combination with a container and a closure therefor, of a guide member on one of said members extending in the direction of the length of the receptacle, a guide on the other member of the receptacle for cooperation with the longitudinally extending guide, and a device on the longitudinally extending guide cooperating with the exterior of the member carrying the second named guide to form a clasp for securing the receptacle within the pocket of a user.
2. In a pocket receptacle, the combination with a container and a closure therefor, of a guide member secured to the closure at one end, extending in the direction of the length of the receptacle and resilient transversely of its length, a guide on the casing having the first named guide cooperating therewith to guide the closure longitudinally of the container, and a device on the end of the first named guide cooperating with the exterior of the container to form a clasp for securing the receptacle within the pocket of a wearer.
3. In a pocket receptacle, the combination with a container and a closure therefor, of a sleeve arranged on the container, a transversely resilient rod forming a connecting member between the container and closure and carried by the closure and slidable in the sleeve to permit separation of the closure and container, and an enlargement on the rod to cooperate with the container and form a clasp for securing the receptacle within the pocket of a wearer.
4B. In a pocket receptacle, the combination with a container and a closure therefor, of
a transversely resilient rod of circular cross section secured at one end to the exterior of the closure, offset and extended longitudiially of the receptacle, a sleeve on the exterior of the container having the rod guided therein, and an enlargement on the free end of the rod arranged to cooperate with the sleeve to limit the longitudinal movement of the closure and to cooperate with the exterior of the container 'to form a clasp.
