Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led July 2, 1909. Serial No. 505,662.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. STREI- FERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shaft holders and has for an object to provide a device of this character that can be conveniently engaged with the back strap and supported in such a position that will enable its being effectively and conveniently engaged with the thill.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a thill showing the application of my improved support thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the support. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken through the support. Fig. 4 is a detail bottom view of a portion of the support showing the manner of fixing the hinged closure-forming portion of the holder to the fixed portion thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the support showing the spring clasp.
My improved shaft support comprises a metallic member 1 which is bent upon itself to form a stem 2 and a pair of oppositely curved members 3 and 4, the latter being somewhat longer than the former. The member 3 is hingedly connected at its lower extremity to a closure forming portion 5 which carries a retaining pin 8 adapted to be engaged in the perforation 7 in the spring clasp 6. The clasp is preferably formed from a single piece of flat spring steel and is bent to provide a finger engaging lip 9. The member 1 constructed on lines just described is of substantially elliptical form and conforms in contour to that of the thill A of the shaft shown in Fig. 1 and is thus adapted to receive the latter as will be appreciated. The member 1 is closed upon all sides by a leather casing 10 and the closure forming portion 5 is inclosed in a casing 11. The easing which incloses the member l is provided with an eye portion 12 with which is engaged a buckle 13 for receiving a back band strap. The casing is also provided with a loop 111 for the reception of the terminal end of the back band strap after the latter has been properly associated with the herein described buckle. The casing 10 has secured thereto a strap or connection 15 which is adapted to be attached to the girth strap which may be of the usual or any preferable well known form.
The construction of the shaft holder llerein shown and described is extremely simple and is such that it may be put upon the market at a minimum cost. By providing the closure forming portion 5 it is obvious that the same .may be actuated to open or close the portion 1 so as to permit the removal from or insertion of the thill.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as Vnew is A shaft support comprising a metal body member formed of sheet material and bent upon itself to form an upwardly extending stem and downwardly and oppositely curved members, one of said members being of a less length than the other, the said short member having a hinged closure thereon and provided with a pin, a clasp carried by the longer portion of the member and engaging the pin to hold the closure portion of the member in closed position, and a case of pliable material covering the closure and cover ing the said member and formed above the stein of the member to provide a buckle-receiving loop.
