TOY MERRY-GO-Rm T0 all 'whom z' may concern.' Be it known that I, Jannes J. CONNOLLY, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at. Xcn Bedford, in the county of Bristol, State ot Massachusetts, have invented csrtain new and useful Improvements in Toy .\lerr r-Go-Rounds; and I do herehydeclnre thc following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it. apport-aine to make 'and use the same.y v
This invention relates to toy merry-go- .round:. and has for one of its objects to .simplify and improve the construction and decrease theexpense ot' manufacture of devices ot' this character. l
'ith these and other objects in view the invention consists in a base member having :i lateral projection at one. sidefor support- 0V ing a motor, a plurality of spaced posts at.
the margin of the base., a central post mounted for rotation upon the base, a floor mem.
her carried oy the post near its lower end, a disk carried hy the'post intermediate its 25. ends and provided with a plurality of radieting;l firms from which figures of persons, animals or objects are suspended,A a cap bearing upon the. upper'end of' the central post, radiating. stay members between the cap and the i'narginal posts, and means whereby the rotary motion of the motor is imparted to the central post and thence to the arms carrying the figures.
. The. invention further consists in certain 0 novel features of construct-ion as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed ont in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the. preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 isA u plan view of the improved device. .Fig 2 is a' sideelevaticn with portions in section 0n the line-Z-Q of Fig. l. Fig. 3 isa plan view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig.
l is an enlarved sectional detail illustrating the. construction of the head portion of the improved device.
The improved device comprises a base 10,
preferably or' wood and formed with alut.-
eral projection 11 at one side, the base hav- '50 ing central socket or step l2 and with s :iced marginal apertures to receive vertical yholding devices 13 operating to suport a plurality of spaced vertical posts 14.
L e member 10 is preferably circular and the posts 14 are thereforearranged at equal y Spectcation :it Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 18, 1911, Appneamn mea november 2619o9. snat no. 530,012.
distances apart around the margin of the base. For the purpose of illustration live of these posts are shown, but it will be im derstood that any required number may be employed. Each ofthe posts 14 tsprovxded i0 'with a pin 15 extending from its upper end,
the'object to be hereafter explained'.
Centrally of the base portion 10 e poat'l is arranged, the lower end ef the post having a stud 17 fitted in the socket 12 und ro- 5 tative therein, while a stud 18 extends from the upper end of the central post, as shown. Mounted upon the post 16 and spaced a short distance from its lower end is a floor i 1S preferably of heavy cardboard and in 70 circular shape with its margin s slightly from the'posts 14. Y Arranged above the stud 18 of the oem tral post, is a cap member 20 having asocket bearing over the stud 18, The cop is pref- I5 erahly cone shape as shown, and with a tubui lar sleeve 21 upon its upper end, the sleeve being utilized to carry n smell pole 22 to support a flag 23 or other ornement. VTho lower end of the cap 20is formed with); 80 short vertical portion 24, and ittin into the vertical portion at. their inner en s are a plurality of rods 25, the rods equal in number to the 'posts 14 and euch rod pro vided with an eye 26 fitting over one of the 88 pins 15 of the posts, whereby the member is coupled to the posts and su ported in 1208ition to carry the u per en of the post 16 and thus support-, t e latter in vertical position. l 90 Mounted upon the post 16 and' spaced below its upper end is a disk 27, the d' connected securely to the central post and pai-taking of its motion. Connected to tho disk 2? are a plurality et arms 28, the arms 95 arranged radially of the disk, as. shown. Each of the arms 28 is formed with its inner end inclined und secuned as by screws 29 or other fastening means to the disk 27, and each of the arms is likewise provided y with spaced vertical apertures to receive vertical rods 30, the rods utilized to carry g. ures of people, animals and thel like, ns shown.' By this means it will be obviousk that when the post 16 is rotated the disk 27 105i with its arms 28-and the figures supported upon the rods 30 will b'e rotated with tho' post andlkewisewith the iloor, -ss hereafter more fully explained;
Mountedupon. 'the projection 11 issn-toy nos motor 31 which may be an ordinary toy steam engine having means such :is an al- -cohol lamp for generating the requisite heat to produce the steam and with a cranlr shaft 32 having a' cord pulley 3?. Connected to the post 16 between the tloor 19 and the socket l2 is a cord pulley 34 around which a cord beit 35 leads from the pulley 33 of the engine. Rising from the base opposite the extension 11 is a horizontal shaft. 3G liaving depending ends 37 by which it is supported spaced above the base. Mounted for rota- `tion upon the shaft 27 are two guide pulleys E38-39. thejguide pulleys being loose upon the shaft 36. Rising from the base 10 are two spaced guide pins 4041 in position to guide the cord belt 35 in its passage from the pulleys 3&-39 and between 'the pulleys S23- 34... By this simple means it will be obvious that the belt will be prop- 'y erly lguided in its operation and prevented from running off from the pulleys.
` y sion 11 being integral, while the floor 19 will preferably be of pasteboard of sufficient thickness to be self Sustaining when attached to the post. The cord pulley 34 will also preferably be of wood While the suspension -rods 30, the 'stay rods 25 the su porting sleeve 21 and the flag staff 22 wil preferably be of metal. The shaft 36 with its depending ends 37 will preferably be formed A of'a single piece of Wire with the terminals of the portions 37 inserted into sockets in the base 10, while the pins l0- 4l will also be of wire inserted at their ends in the base.
The guide pullevs 3S- 39 may he of wood or metal as preferred, while the engine ein`- ployed may be any of the ordinary toy engines in common use.
The figures 42 may be varied to any required extent and figures already manufactured may be. employed or figures may be 5ov y constructed especially for the device. The.
figures ivill be, detachably .connected to the rods 30 so that they may be changed as required to increase the interest in the toy and to enable the child to change tbe figures around as desired. f f
Vv'liat is claimed is A toy nierry-go-round eoinprisiner a hase iiieuiber provided with a central step and spaced marginal apertures. a central post rotatively engaging iii said step, .spaced outer posts havingr pinsrxtending frm-n' their ends and engaging by the pins at one end in said marginal apertures. a can niember fitting upon said central post and in which the same revolves. rods extending between said Cap member and the upper pins of said spaced posts, a dial; conne-fled to said central post intermediate the ends, a
-cil
second disk secured to said central postY adjacent its loivei' end and adapted to serve as a. rotating platform, a plurality of arms radiating froinsaid upper disk` and a plu rality of figures depending from said arms above said rotating platform. j
In testimony whereof, I aliix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
