Description

L. 8 CH U LTZ E.
Toys. 'No.154,285. PatentedAugJ8J874.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFF-IGE.
LOUIS SOHULTZE, on NEW YORK, n. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,285, dated August 18, 1874; application filed February 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LOUIS SGHULTZE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hot-Air Wheel- Toy; and I do hereby declare the following to Y be a full,c1ear, and exact description thereof,
whichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a perspective view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a Wheel composed of a disk with a series of radiating vanes, and of a platform secured to said wheel, in combination with a standard which terminates in a sharp point, to engage with a corresponding cavity in the center of the wheel in such a manner that, when the wheel is adjusted on its standard and a number of candles or tapers are fastened on the platform and ignited, the heat of the flames causes the wheel to turn round with more or less velocity, according to the position of the radiating vanes, and a toy is obtained which produces a beautiful effect.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a wheel composed of a disk, at, and a series of radiating vanes, b, the stems of which are placed in sockets in the disk in such a manner that the vanes can be readily adjusted at any desired inclination. From the disk at is suspended a platform, B, which connects with said disk by rods 0, and which is provided with a large central hole, 11, through which ex tends the standard 0. This standard rises from a foot, D, and it terminates in a sharp point, e, which is intended to bear ina V-shaped cavity, f,in the under surface of the disk a. (See Fig. 2.)
When the wheel A with its suspended platform B has been adjusted on the standard 0, I place upon said platform a number of candles or tapers, E, and when these tapers are ignited, the heat of the flames produces an up ward current of air, which acts upon the vanes 12 and imparts to the wheel A a revolving motion. By adjusting the vanes the velocity of this motion can be increased or diminished, and the wheel can be made to revolve in" either direction. The vanes are made in various colors, whereby the effectof the revolving wheel is improved.
If desired, two or more platforms of gradually-decreasing size can be secured, to the "wheel A, the lowest platform being the largest,
so that on each of said platforms a number of tapers can be fixed, and by these means a very rapid revolving motion can be imparted to the Wheel.
If the wheel is made large, and if, by applying a number of platforms the number of flames is increased, the power of the wheel is such that it is enabled to carry articles of more or less weight, which may be placed upon the platforms or connected to the same in any desired manner.
I am aware that candles have been arranged upon fixed standards for imparting motion to
