MECHANICAL RACING TOY. I
Application filed June 29, 1925. Serial in). 40,146.
The invention is for .an improvement in a mechanical racing toy.
The invention relates to toys of the general type disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 665,114 filed September V motor 1s a transverse diametrically extend- In toys of this type, a gyratory motion is imparted to a suitable pan having one or more continuous tracks thereon. As the ob ects pan ,gyrates, gravity propelled guided by the tracks are caused to travel around the tracks. \Vhere there are two or more tracks, the appearance of a race is simulated and an extremely attractive and fascinating toy is provided. 1
This invention is for an improved me chanical structure for toys of this type wherein the appearance and assembly of the toy is improved and facilitated, and
wherein a relatively compact and rugged.
construction is secured.
The invention has for a further object to provide a smooth-running toy ofimproved construction.
The invention may be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an as sembled toy embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section through the toy.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a detail part of the toy.
Figure 4 is a. top plan view of the base of the toy. V
In the drawings, 5 designates a flanged base member of which 6 is the flange. At the center of the base member is a recess 5. At diametrically opposite points the recess in the base extends out to the periphery of the base, such diametrically opposite radial depressions being desig-' nated 5 Tightly fitted over the flange of the base,
and secured thereto is the wall 7 of a cyor otherwise secured in the central housing, is the frame 10 of a spring motor 11. This motor drives a centrally located disk 12, having an eccentric opening therein, for the a The central part of the purpose hereinafter described. .The' motor has a key stem 13 projecting through-the top of the housing, and to this stem is ap-- plied a winding key 14. 1
Contained within thehousing below the ing bar 15 whose opposite ends] project through the respective slots in the housing. The endiportions 15 of-this bar are rigidly secured to a dished sheet; metal pan-16 having its-central portion removed so that it mayv fit over and surround the housing. This pan preferably has embossed-annular ribs thereon dividing the pan or track member into a plurality of circulartracks- 16? foursuch tracks being shown. 7
As thus arranged, the operation of the motor imparts a gyratory motion to the pin 17 whose one end is set in a central hole.
The base member is preferably of the peculiar shape described for the purpose of providing a flange on the base of sufficient width to permit the housing 7 to be firmly fitted and secured to the base while the depressions allow for the proper tilting motion of the cross bar. The conical central portion of the bar provides a good bearing for the tilting 'bar, so that the tilting motion of the pan is smooth and continuous.
The toy as thus constructed is relatively lower than the toy shown. in my said copending application, so that it requires less room for packing or display. The central housing not only compactly encloses and supports the operating parts, but its exterior may be attractively lithographed to represent a grandstand or be otherwise decorated to add to the attractive appearance of the to in assembling the toy, the base may be the part lastsecured in place, so that the toy can be easily (assembled.
I claim as my invention 1. A mechanical toy including a central housing having openings in the side walls thereof, a transverse bar passing through the housing and having a rocking support Within the housing, a track member encircling the housing and secured to the opposite ends of the cross bar, and'means in the housing and supported thereby for imparting a progressive tilting motion to the cross bar to correspondingly rock 'the'tracl: member, and a gravity propelled object'on the track member.
2. A mechanical toy including a flanged base member, a housing member fitted over the'flanged base member, a motor supported in the housing above the base member, a post pivoted on the base to be gyrated by the motor and operatively connected with the motor, a rocking beam secured to the post'and having its ends projecting through the housing, a ring like'track member surrounding the housing and secured to the rocking beam, and a gravity propelled object on the track.
3. A mechanical toy including a base memher, a cylindrical housing carried on the base member, amotor supported in the upper part of the housing, a rocking beam in thehousing having its opposite ends projecting therefrom, cooperating means on the motor and beam for imparting a gyratory motion to the beam, and a ring like pan surrounding the housing and secured to the opposite ends of said beam.
4. A mechanical toy or" the class described includin a base member a su portin n 7 1. b
