MUTOSCOPE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BARRETT SMITH, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Sufiblk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mutoscopes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to mutoscopes, and more especially to devices of this character that may be used for advertising purposes.

The object of my invention is to provide a mutoscope preferably carrying or associated with advertising matter and adapted for use in connection with a desk or table so that the advertising matter may be continually before the user.

In that particular embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, I have shown the same in the form of a paper-weight, although it will be understood that I do not limit myself thereto.

In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the mutoscope pad and its holder. Fig. 3 is an end view of said pad and holder. Fig. A is a plan View of the rod by which said pad is operated. Fig. 5 is an end view of a modified form of holder, and Fig. 6 is a plan View of the operating rod adapted to be used with the holder shown in Fig. 5.

In the drawings selected for illustrating my invention, F is a triangular-shaped casing of such size and construction as to adapt the same for use as a paper-weight. A mutoscope pad A, consisting of a number of picture-cards showing successive views of an object, scene, etc., is secured in a suitable holder such as B or B. The rod D or D is pivoted in the casing and the holder B or B secured thereto in any suitable manner. In the present instance, I have shown two modes of securing the holder to its operating rod. The holder shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is provided at its outer ends with the clips C 0 each of which has a slot E adapted to fit over the rod D at the reduced portions E E thereof and be held thereon by friction.

The holder shown in Fig. 5 is provided with a square longitudinally extending hole M arranged to take the squared portion M of the rod D. The diagonal of the said squared portion 1W is of course equal to the diameter of the round portion 0 thereof, which has a bearing in one of the side walls Specification of Letters Eatent.

of the casing. The reduced rounded portion N of the rod D has its bearing in the other side wall of the casing. Each rod ter1ninates in an operating handle I or 1, shown in the present instance as bent at right angles thereto. The check G pivoted to the rod J, which in turn is secured to the side walls of .the casing, affords a convenient means for holding the pad A above the opening in the front wall of the casing, the said check being held normally in the position shown by the lip K which bears against the front wall of the casing.

When the rod D is rotated, as by bringing the handle I upward to the position shown in Fig. 1, the picturepad will pass over and above the check G and will be held in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. As the rod D is rotated by moving the handle I downwardly, the pictures printed on the upper sides of the picture-cards will be successively moved past the edge of the check, which preferably extends from one side wall of the casing to the other, and be exhibited to the observer looking through the opening in the front wall of the casing in the general direction of the arrow X until the pad has the position shown in dotted lines'at A in line with the horizontal shelf H.

As shown in Figs. 3 and 5, I prefer to arrange the slots E and the hole M, respectively, unsymmetrically with respect to the ends of the holder so that the picture pad may be eccentrically mounted on the operating rod, the junction of the pad and rod being between the center line O() of said holder and the lower side thereof. By means of this construction the movement of the lowermost picture cards of the pad past the check is rendered slower than that of the uppermost cards, thereby preventing some of the lowermost cards from snapping past the check too rapidly to permit the observer to see them clearly.

The walls of the casing may be provided with advertising matter or with one or more brackets such as shown at L for holding a calendar or advertising matter. The picture-pads will preferably be illustrative of the business of the advertiser.

I do not wish to limit myself to the use of the mutoscope herein described as an advertising device, and it will be obvious that many other modifications may be made in the apparatus without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. An article of manufacture comprising a casing provided with an opening in one of its faces, a rod pivoted therein, apad consisting of a series of picture-cards secured to said rod, a check pivoted to said casing and arranged to permit said pad to pass upwardly and over the same, a lip on said ch ck normally bearing against the easing whereby said check will hold said pad in position above said opening, and means whereby said rod may be rotated for successively bringing said pictures below said opening.

2. An article of manufacture comprising a casing provided with an opening in one of its faces, a rod pivoted therein, a pad consisting of a series of picture-cards, a holder for said pad, a rod pivoted to said casing and removably secured to said holder, a check pivoted to said casing and arranged to permit the pad to pass upwardly over the same, a lip on said check normally bearing against the casing whereby said check will hold said pad in position above said opening, and means whereby said rod may be rotated for successively bringing said pictures below said opening.

3. An article of manufacture comprising a casing provided with an opening in one of its faces, a rod pivoted therein, a pad consisting of a series of picture-cards eccentrically secured to said rod, means for holding said pad in position above said opening, and means whereby said rod may be rotated for successively bringing said pictures below said opening.

4. An article of manufacture comprising a casing provided with an opening in one of its faces, a rod pivoted therein, a pad consisting of a series of picture-cards eccentrically secured to said rod, a check pivoted to said casing anc arranged to permit said pad to pass upwardly and over the same, a lip on said check normally bearing against the casing whereby said check will hold said pad in position above said opening, and means whereby said rod may be rotated for successively bringing said pictures below said opening.

5. An article of manufacture comprising a casing provided with an opening in one of its faces, a rod pivoted therein, a pad consisting of a series of picture-cards, a holder for said pad, a rod pivoted to said casing, means eccentrically securing said rod to said holder, means for holding said pad in position above said opening, and means whereby said rod may be rotated for successively bringing said pictures below said opening.

6. An article of manufacture comprising a casing provided with an opening in one of its faces, a rod pivoted therein, a pad consisting of a series of picture-cards, a holder for said pad, a rod pivoted to said casing, means eccentrically securing said rod to said holder, a check ivotcd to said casing and arranged to permit the pad to pass upwardly over the same, a lip on said check normally bearing against the casing whereby said check will hold said pad in position above said opening, and means whereby said rod may be rotated for successively bringing said pictures below said opening.

7. An article of manufacture comprising a casing provided with an opening in one of its faces, a rod pivoted therein, a pad consisting of a series of picture-cards secured to said rod, a check for holding said pad in position above said opening, means whereby said rod may be rotated for successively bringing said pictures below said opening, and means whereby the movement of the lowermost picture cards past said check is rendered slower than that of the uppermost cards.

8. As an article of manufacture, a paperweight provided with an opening in one of its walls, a pad consisting of a series of picture-cards pivoted to the walls of said paper-weight, means for successively exhibiting said pictures at said opening, and means whereby the movement of the lowermost picture cards is rendered slower than that of the uppermost cards.
