Description

`985,210. -sAFETY-ENVELOPL, JOHN, P.
1910. Serial No. 585,237.
To all whom it may concern:
I 3e it known that I, Jol-m P. SANDERS a citizen of the United States, residing at t. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Safety-Enyelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clearand exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap iertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to new and useful improvements in envelops, and more 'iar- 5 ticularl to the class most generally known under t e title of safety envelops.
*A .An object of thisinventon is the provision of a safety envelop, havingmeans for holding the closing flap so that the envelop y cannot be opened without tearing the same,
thereby rendering it practically im ossible for .any one to tamper with the enve o the device being substantially invisible, an used in connection with the ordinary gummed sealing flap, so that the appearance is the saine as the ordina envelop.
Another object o this invention is to im prove and'simplify the construction of devices of this character, renderi them oomsratively sim le and inexpensive t manuaeture relish eg d m heaven 0 rated. n e inept m Se nd i i t e above and various other. objects.
lin view, this invention resides in the nove! ifeatures of construction, formations, combienients of parts to be hereinafter more iilly described, claimed ini, in which- `igure 1 is a fra inentary rear elevation of nn envelop embo ying my invention' Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the safety device detached from the envelop, and shown in i its interlockcd position, and Figs. 3 and 4 jposed in the safety device in unlocked postion. I Referring to the drawings by characters lerally an envelop of the usual construction, comprising a front body portion 2 and a 4 and a top sealing flap 5. The safety piece comprises a pair of interlockin members 7 and 8, secured to the under sides of the bottom flap and top closing flap respectively, by means of pieces of fabric, or the like, saturated -with any suitable adhesive substance. The interlocking member T comrises a loop t), formed of resilient wire, or the like, bent at its opposite ends in siibstan- `tially parallel relation, and terminatin in i outwardl extending ends, to provi e a l means w ereby the said loop 9, the outer and illustrated in the accompanying draw` fare perspective views of the members coin- 12 of reference, the numeral 1 designates gen4 t back, consisting of a bottoni lap 3, end flaps can be held against lateral movementy with respect to the said'top flap 5,'while the:
.interlocking member 8 is-formed of the same material as the before mentioned member 7. bent substantially rectangular in shape, and provided with a' centrally dis osed inward?y proiieeting spring finger 11,a aptedto yiel ing y engage one side of the rectangular member 8.
From the foregoing disclosure it will be obvious that as the bent end of the loop 9 is inserted through the opening 12 in the.v bottom flap 3, the said loop 9 will slide along the sprin finger 11 being retained thereon by the stiffness of the upper flap of the envelop until it engages the contacting sides of the interlocking member 8, and will obvi oiisly force the said finger 11 from engagement with the said side of the interlocking member, allowing the finger to slip through the loop and securely lock the top flap 5 in its closed osition.
From tie previous description, taken in connection with the drawing it will be manifest that a safety envelop is 'provided for which will fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus full described this inveiition, what is claime as new and what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In s device of the character described the 'combination with an envelop, of interlocking members secured to the top and bottom JOHN P. SANDERS.
Witnesses: i Jos. J. Hausa, l Auousr Bauen.
