Description

Sept; 11, R9340 H. w. VIERENGEL PAPER BAG Filed July 8, 1930 I N V EN TOR. HERE Y W.VIEHEN GEL,
Patented Sept. 11, 1934 UITED STATES OFFICE Application July& 1
My invention relates to bags or envelopes, sometimes called handle bags, in which suitable carrying and locking means are incorporated in and form part of the bag.
Some of the objects of my invention are:-
1. To incorporate, in a paper bag, carrying means and locking means the operations and functions of which are, respectively, independent.
2. To provide in a bag of that kind a handle to which freely protrudes from the bag.
3. To provide in a paper bag a handle which permanently protrudes therefrom.
4. To provide closing means on the sides of the open end of a paper bag, so that the contents it of such a bag may be centrally disposed therein and be retained in such a position.
5. To provide independent closing means on paper bag which are separately folded over and locked to the bag simultaneously with the fold- Zll ing operation.
6. To facilitate the closing of a paper bag by folding only parts of the upper bag end in the locking operation.
I attain these and other objects by the devices as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
' which:
Fig. .1 shows the developed blank of the bag of my invention.
Fig. 2 shows a top view of such a bag in a to closed position.
Fig. 3 shows the corresponding side elevation of my bag.
Figs. 4 and 5 show two modifications of the open upper ends of the bag of my invention. 33 Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the various views.
The bag blank of Fig. 1 comprises a back wall 11, a front wall 12 and extensions 13 and 14, and
l me
15 and 16, respectively, on the sides of said walls.
In making up the bag the extensions are folded onto the wallsalong the scored lines 17 and 13, the two walls of the bag are folded upon each other along the scored line 19 and then the extensions 13 and 15, and 1d and ldare glued together, respectively, so that they extend into the interior of thebag as shown in Fig. 3. Since the extensions 13, 15, and 1d, 16 would interfere with the goods placed into the bag and would tilt 13 and 14, or the extensions 15 and 16 are gummed 5&5 on the side which eventually comes to face the sec, Serial No. 466,337
(on. see-es) I adjoining wall, before they are folded over along the scored lines 17 and 18.
Reinforcing pieces 20 and 21 are glued onto the insides of the walls near the ends of the blank. The reinforcement 20 covers part of the back wall 11, as well as the handle extension 22 and part of the locking flaps 23 and.24. The locking flaps 23 and 24 connect to the back wall 11 along scored lines 25 and 26 and are severed from the handle extension 22 by cuts 27 and 28, respectively. The openings 29' and 30 are punched through the reinforced parts of the front and back walls in such a manner that the respective openings 29 and 30 register with each other, when the walls are folded onto each other along the scored line 19.
Upon the locking flaps 23 and 24 scored lines 31 and 32 may be provided, from which extend the trapezoidally shaped wings 33 and 34, respectively. These wings 33 and 34 are provided in the locking flaps by means of the substantially trapezoidally disposed cuts 35 and 36. Along the scored lines 31 and 32 the wings 33 and 34 are shorter than the vertical sides of the openings 29 and 30, whereas the opposite sides of the wings 33 and Marc longer than said vertical sides of the openings 29 and 30.
The scored lines 31 and 32 are indicated in Fig. l, in order more clearly to illustrate how the respective wings may be pushed out from the respective locking flaps by the action of a finger. Lines 31 and 32 however do not have to be scored in the practical application of my invention.
A cut 37 is provided in the handle 22, which surrounds the elongated piece 38. Said piece 33 may be folded back onto the handle extension as shown in Fig. 3 thus providing a round edge 39 around the opening 40. The opening ill is of sumcient width to accommodate several fingers of the user alongside of each other, and the folded round edge 39 prevents the paper from cutting the hand of the user while he or she is carrying the bag. I
Fig. 3 shows, in closed. position, the bag which is formed out of the blank of Fig. 1. To close the bag, the user successively bends the locking flaps 23 and 24 over the front 12 of the bag and simultaneously pushes the respective wings 33 and 3% through the openings 29 and 30 of the bag. Since .the free ends of the flaps 33 and 3d are wider than the openings 29 and 30, the wings remain extended through the-upper ends of the bag and securely retain the bag in a closed position.
Fig. a shows, in an open position, a modified bag of my construction. It differs from the bag Oil lid
of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 by a reversal of the arrangement of the openings 29 and 30, and of the wings 33 and 34. The openings 29 and are provided in the locking flaps 23 and 24, and the wings are provided in the walls of the bag by corresponding trapezoidal cuts; In closing the bag of this modification, the user folds the flaps 23 and 24 onto the front wall and then pushes the wings 33 and 34 through the openings 29 and 30 in the locking flaps. By means of this modification I provide a very strong locking means, because the wings 33 and 34 are not only cut out of the reinforced material of the bag, but two wings, in a double layer, as cut out of the front as well as the back wall, are used on each side of the bag.
In the modification of Fig. 5, the locking means are similar to the locking means of the bag shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. In fact, disregarding the handle extension, this view shows how the bag of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 looks when it is not closed.
But in the view of Fig. 5 I show a handle extension 41 on the front wall 12 as well as on the back wall 11. The two handle extensions are perforated in registry with each other in an opening 42, which serves to accommodate the hand of the user. The corresponding blank, as compared with I the blank shown in Fig. 1, would also show a handie extension centrally extending from the lower end of the blank, and it would be reinforced by the correspondingly extended reinforcing piece 21. By arranging my bag in this fashion I obtain a much stronger handle, and the convenience of the handle for the user may be enhanced by bending over, upwardly, the portion of the paper originally contained in the opening 42, thus providing a folded edge in a manner similar to the folded edge 39 of Figs. 3 and 4.
It is clear, that the openings 29 and 30 and the cuts 27, 28, 35, 36 and 37 are provided in the bag, after it has been assembled,by a single stamping operation. This stamping operation comprises the making of the opening 42 in the manufacture of the modified bag shown in Fig. 5.
Although I have shown and described one form of embodiment of my invention in detail, yet I do not wish to be limited thereby, except as the state of the art and the appended claims may require, for it is obvious that various modifications and changes may be made in the form of embodiment of my invention, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. a
