JOSEPH BENEDICiT TUOR, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
REMOVABLE S POUT FOR JACKETED CANS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 21, 1911.
Application filed August 19, 1907. Serial No. 389,153.
invention being to provide means for directing the liquid from the discharge opening and to prevent it from spilling or flowing down the top or side walls of the jacket.
My invention consists generally in providing p removable spout, having means for connection with the top of the can jacket.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure .1 is a top view showing the application of my invention to a jacketed can, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of the can, Fig. 3 is an outside view showing the flange inclosing the opening in the top of the can, Figs. 4; and 5 are detail views of the spout device.
In the drawing, 2 represents the can having a covering 3 of wood or other suitable material and a mp4. also concealed by a cover 5. The top and the cover have an opening 6 therethrough provided with a bushing 7 and a flange 8, which rests upon the cover of .the can but is spaced therefrom sufliciently on oneside or is capable of springing slightly away from the cover to allow the insertion of the end of the spout.
9 is a stopper of suitable material and 10 is the spout, made preferably of sheet metal having a bottom that is concaved at one end to fit the curvature of the bushing 7. Side walls 11 are provided by bending up the edges of the spout and between these side walls and the bottom slits 12 are formed, which are adapted to receive the edge of the flange 8, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. \Vhen this spot has beenput in place the i liquid can be poured out of the can without danger of spilling. The tapered form of the spout adapts itfor directing the liquid into the neck of a bottle or another can if preferred.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a jacketed can having a discharge opening in its top and a.
flanged ring inclosing said opening, of a removable spout having a-bottom and side walls and slits formed between said bottom and side walls and adapted to receivesaid flange the said side walls converging to form a comparatively narrow, discharge opening.
The combination, with a jacketed can having a discharge openingin its top and a flanged ring lnclosing said opening, of a. re-
movable. spout having longitudinal slits in its side walls to receive the flange of said ring.
3. The combination, with a jacketed can having a discharge opening in its top, and a flanged ring inclosing said opening, of a removable spout having longitudinal slits in its side walls adapted to receive the flange of said ring, the inner end of said spout bein curved to fit the curvature of said flanged ring, substantially as described 4. The combination, with a jagceted can having a discharge opening in its top, of a spout removably mounted on said jacket and, projecting laterally with respect to the same and in a plane parallel substantially with the top of said can, the inner end of the bottom of said spout being concave to fit the wall of said-discharge opening, substantially as described.
5. As a new article of manufacture,. a spout for jacketed cans having asubstantially flat bottom and converging side walls, and slits formed between said bottom and side walls, for the purpose specified.
