Description

n. CHALLIND R.
Lids f0a'1eIIy,GIasses.-- v No. 138,735. PatentedMay 1331873.;
A 11, PHOTO-LITHUGRAPHIC on My (assoma's macssa) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID GHALLINOR, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENTIN LIDS FOR JELLY-GLASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 38,735, dated May 13, 1873; application filed April 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID OHALLINOR, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lids for Jelly-Glasses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in lid for jelly-glasses; and consists in a glass disk provided with a metallic flange, which flange projects down over the top edge or lip of the jelly-glass.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jelly-glass provided with my improvement in lid. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A represents the lid, which consists of a glass disk, D, which may be pressed glass or cut from Window-glass. 'This disk is provided With a metallic flange, O, which may be formed of any suitable sheet metal. I give preference to tin, in consequence of its cheapness. In forming the flange I take a strip of tin of suitable width, and by means of forming-dies form the flange as shown in Fig. 2. Prior to soldering the two ends of the formed flange together the glass disk D is placed in the flange, the ends of which are then soldered together, thus securing the glass disk in position within the flange. The portion of the flange projecting downward fits over the outer wall of the lip of the jelly-glass B, the glass disk fitting down on the top edge of the jellyglass, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing.
The advantage of a lid constructed as herein described consists in covering the contents of the jellyglass with glass instead of metal, which is liable to corrode, and often injures the contents of the jelly-glass.
Having thus described my improvement in lids for jelly-glasses, what I claim as of my invention is 1. A lid for jelly-glasses, said lid consisting of the glass diskD and metallic flange 0, substantially asherein described.
2. The hereinbefbre-described lid, in combination with a jelly-glass, as and for the purpose set forth.
. DAVID OHALLINOR.
