CAN TOP AND COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,160, dated November 23, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. R012- BINs,of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Can Tops and Covers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improved cantop cover and a means for retaining the same either open or closed, as may be desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view showing the cover closed. Fig. 2 is a view showing it opened. Fig. 3 is a section through the top of the can and cover, showing the latter open.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved cover and means for retaining the same open or closed, and it is especially-2p plicable to packages containing articles in a dry condition, such as tea.
A is the can, which in the present case I have shown made square.
B is the top, having a triangular opening made in one corner for the introduction and discharge of the contents. In forming the top an indentation or depression, 0, is made parallel with the long side of the triangular opelr ing which is made in the top.
D is the cap or cover, which is made by cut ting a piece of sheet metal of the shape of the opening and enough larger to extend slightly over its edges in each direction. The edge which'corresponds with the hypotenuse of the triangular opening is projected slightly and curves downward, as shown at E, so as to rest in the depression or channel 0, before described. A small slot or opening, F, is made through the cover near this rear edge, and the end of a spring, G, passes through this open ing. The rear end of the spring is soldered or otherwise secured upon the upper or outer surface of the can-top, and the spring has a peculiar curve formed in it at H, which serves to hold the cover open when it has been thrown back, so that the edge of the notch or slot in the cover rests in,thiscurved spring. which the cover turns to be opened or closed,
the cover being held open by the curved spring, as before described, and when closed it is held by the pressure of the spring upon its top. The spring moves easily in the slot of the cover, so that the cover may be opened or closed by taking hold of the projecting point I, and it is easily held in either position, as desired. By this construction all the actuating parts of thecover are upon the outside of the can, and are easily applied after the can is finished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cantop having a triangular opening at one angle, and a longitudinal channel or depression made parallel with the hypotenuse of the opening, in combination with a cover fitting over said opening, having its rear edge bent so as to fit the channel or depression and serve as a hinge about which the cover turns, and the spring G, substantially as herein described.
2. A can-top having a triangular opening at one angle, and a channel or depression formed in the outside parallel with the rear edge of the opening, in combination with the cover having its rear edge formed so as to fit said channel, and a spring entering a slot in said cover, so as to hold it open or closed, substantially as herein described.
3. A can-top having a triangular opening formed in one of its angles and a cover fitted to open or close over this opening, said cover the slot in the cover, and having a short bend formed in it, so as to hold the cover open or closed, substantially as herein described.
