To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, JAooB H. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Jars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in receptacle-tops, the object of the invention being to provide a top which may be attached to the ordinary fruitjar, whereby the jar may be converted into a receptacle for the carrying of various liquids or other substances.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a top of this character with a lid by means of which access to the receptacle mayreadilybe had, and also to provide means for the ready emptying or pouring of the contents of the receptacle.

Briefly described, the invention comprises a top embodying a securing body portion, preferably of the threaded form, whereby it may be attached to the ordinary fruit-jar after the usual top of said jar is detached. The top plate is provided with a central opening to give access through the top into the receptacle, and hinged to this top plate is a coverplate, peculiarly constructed to cover the opening as well as the pouring vent.

Other specific details of construction are involved and will be hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claim, and in describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this application, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary fruit-jar equipped with my improved top. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my improved jar-top, and Fig. 4 is an underneath plan view of the same.

Fruit-jars of the Mason and other similar types are ordinarily provided with a screwthreaded neck 1, such as shown in the present illustration, and the top or sealing cover for these jars is threaded onto this neck. I aim to provide a top and cover for such jars which after the original top or cover has been removed from the jar may be attached thereto and the jar thus converted into a receptacle convenient for .carrying various liquids. To

this end Iprovide a top embodying a threaded annular band or body portion 2, the top plate of which is cut away centrally, thus forming an annular inwardly extending flange 3, which at one point is provided with a substantially V-shaped cut-out portion 4, the apex of the V-shaped portion extending substantially from the rim of the top and the cut-out portion being in communication with the central opening 5 in said top. Opposite to the V- shaped cut-out portion, which forms a pouring-vent, I cut into the metal and form lips 6 and 7 7, respectively, and these lips are bent around a pintle-pin 8, thus forming a hinge, the strips 7 7 being bent in one direction around said pintle-pin and the strip 6 being bent-in the opposite direction. This hinge secures the cover-plate 9 to the top, and this cover-plate is provided at the side opposite to the hinge with a substantially V-shaped lip 10, which covers the pouring-vent 4 and is of a length sufficient to extend just slightly beyond the rim of the top, as best seen in Figs. 1 and 3, thus forming a finger-piece by means of which the cover-plate 9 may be raised. A bail 11 has its ends bent inwardly to form pintles which engage in openings provided therefor in the screw band or body 2, adjacent the upper edge thereof, the said bail being preferably disposed oppositely to the hinge and to the pouring-vent 4.

By this construction it will be observed that I have provided a top which may be conveniently attached to an ordinary fruit-jar, the tops being made in sizes to fit the different sizes of jars, producing areceptacle in connection with the jar very convenient for the carrying of many forms of liquids which it is not desired to carry in other than a glass receptacle and which it is inconvenient to carry in a glass receptacle unless the same be provided with a top and a carrying means such as a bail.

By providing the flange 3 I form a rest for the cover-plate 9, and this flange 3 also serves as a dam to prevent the flow of the liquid when the receptacle is slightly tilted at any other point except the pouring-vent 4.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, a top for receptacles, comprising an interiorly-threaded annular band or body portion adapted to be secured to the neck of a receptacle, and having an inturned flange at Iits upper end, said flange provided with a V-shaped cut-away IIO portion extending substantially the Width of the flange, and at the opposite end being slitted to form straps, a cover-plate carrying a pintle-pin. around Which said straps are Wound to form a hinge, a substantially \l-shaped lip at the side of the cover-plate opposite the hinge to lie over said \!shaped cut-away portion in the flange of a length suflioient to extend slightly beyond the top of said band or body,

and a bail having its ends swiveled in said :0 band or body portion, substantially as described.
