Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 12, 1908.
Patented Feb. 21, 19.1 1. Serial No. 462.240.
To all whom it may concern.
lie it known that I, MIL'roN J. STOKES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot 'lerre I-laute, in the county of Henderson and State of Illinois, have invented a. new and Improved Coop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improvena-mt inchicken coops of the folding character, and has in view a light construction possessing strength and durability, and easily kept in a clean and sanitary state.
The invention in general consists of an open base, triangular ends and sides; the sides and ends hinged to the base and foldable thereon, and the sides adapted to seat on the ends when the latter are turned upright, and form in connection therewith a coop, said sides each having rigid side bars and a reticulated covering, fasteners. arranged on the side bars of the sides, and a flexible covering for the sides adapted to be detachably applied thereto by the fasteners.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the 'YIOWS.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coop embodying my as when erected; Fig.2isaperspective view of the coop when folded; and Fig. 3 is a plan of the coop when the sides and the ends are thrown down for ventilation and sunning.
The coop embodies in its construction an open base 5, the side frames of which are secured on the end frames, and have hinged thereto sides 6, ordinarily rectangular in form. To the end frames of the base are respectively hinged triangular ends 7, one of which, the front, is provided with a door 8. Both the side frames and end frames are covered with a reticulated material, such as wire netting, and the sides have a further covering of canvas '9 or such other waterproof flexible material. The door 8 is hinged at its bottom to one of the cross wires of the netting and is held in closed position by a keeper 10, which is slidable on vertical wires of the netting and engages over the upper end of the door at one side, the opposite side of the door being engaged at this end by one of the cross wires of the netting.
invention, showing the same I the sides to be folded approximately tlat thereon, forming a compactbody, as illustrated in Fig. 2. With the coop in this knock-down form the, parts are locked together by hooks 11 arranged at each end and engaging the outer side and base.
In erecting the coop, the hooks 11 are disengaged and the sides 6, 6, thrown outwardly, until the ends 7, 7, are turned upright, when the sidesv are seated thereon, forming the coop as illustrated in Fig. 1. The canvas covering 9 on one side of the coop is extended beyond the free or upper end of the side to which it is attached to form a flap, which, when the coop is erected, is folded over on the opposite side, overlapping the canvas covering in connection therewith and covering the joint at the top of the coop, in which position it is detachably secured by suitable fastening devices, these fastening devices for the sides being arranged on the side bars thereof, and, as shown in Fig. 1, consist of ball and socket fastening members 9 and 9 respectively. The rear end of the coop will also be covered with canvas, as also the front end down to or near the door, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The coop as constructed is strictly sanitary, there being no cracks or crevices for the lurking of disease germs, mites, lice, etc., and when unfolded and exposed to the purification of the sun and air an insect-killer in the nature of a powder may be sprinkled over the canvas, and when at night the coop is again in use the powder will fall down over the fowls, getting into their feathers, thus eradicating and ridding them of the lice or mites which they may carry. By having the base of the coop open, the fowls may be given a clean plot of ground or grass as often as desired by simply shifting the position of the coop.
If desired, the canvas on the sides and ends of the coop may be removed and the coop used as a feeding place for young chickens or as a brooder. When the canvas covering is used, it makes a complete shelter tent besides protecting the fowls from the elements.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination of a base, triangular ends and sides, the sides and ends hinged to 5 the base and foldable thereon, and the'sides.
adapted to seat on the ends when the latter are turned uprigi'lt, and form in connection therewith a coop, said sides each having rigid side bars and. a reticulated covering, 10 fasteners arranged on theside bars of the sides, and a flexible covering for the sides adapted to be detachably applied thereto by the fasteners.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MILTON JIMISON STOKES.
