LettersfPatent No. 109,166, dated November 15, 1'870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHICKEN-COOPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN lt. Acnnsaon, of Sadclare that the following is Va full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable vothers skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part .'ot' this specication.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved chicken-coop, showing the portable fence arranged` for use.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the coop, 'partly folded, the fence being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate oorrespomling parts.
My invention has for its object to. furnish a simple and convenient folding coop for.- chickens, young ducks, or other 'fowls5 and It consists in the coop, constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A are. the comer posts, two of which are used at each en'd of the coop, and to the upper ends of which are attached bars or plates, having eyes formed in the upper ends, to receive the ridge-pole or rod B.
C is the covering ofthe coop, which Iis made of canvas, rubber-cloth, or other suitable flexible material.
The covering G is spread over the ridge-pole B, and its edges are secured to the inclined posts A, and at the-rear end of theV coop areconnectcd by a triangular piece ot' the same material.-
' D is the bottom of the coop, which is made in two parts or pieces, hinged to each other at their adjacent edges. d, v i To the ends ot` the end edges of the bottom l) are attached tins, which pass through short longitudinal slots in the lower/parts of -the corner posts A, and to the side edgcsof .'said bottom are attached the lower edges of the cove'ringO, the slots in theposts A allowing the bottom -D to adjust itself' should the lcovering G shrink.
l)Vhcn the coop is opened out, the bottom D is secured in a horizontal position by a button or bar, d, pirotcd to the one partof said bottom, in such a position that when .turned one-quarter around, it may overlap the out-er part of -said bottom. as shown in ydotted lines in iig. 1.
Eis thel forward end of the coop, which is made in the form of a triangular grate, as shown in gs. l and 2, and which isi hinged by one of its inclined side-bars to one of the inclined posts A ofthe forward end ot the coop.
When the door E is closed, it is-secured tothe other 'inclined po'st A by a button, a', or other convenient g fastening.
By thisv construction the.`coop,1when not required for use, may-be folded, without detaching any of its parts, into a very small'compass, for convenience in s torageor transportation. u
To one 4cornerot the coop is detachably attached one 'end of the canvas F, or 'other suitablematerial that forms the fence, Vthe ,end of the cloth F that is attached to the coop being made of the same inclination with the Islant ofthe coop.
To the cloth F,'at suitable distances apart, are attached posts or stakes G, the lower endsv of which are sharpened, so that the said posts may be conveniently forced or driven into the ground.
The post G, at the other end ot'the fence, may be driven into the ground at an inclination corresponding with the inclination of the sides of' the coop, as shown in iig. 1, so as to leave no space between the Icoop and end ot the fence furthe chickens, young ducks, turkeys, or other fowls to escape.
This construction allows the form and position of the fence to be conveniently changed, as may be re quired, t l
Having thus described my invention,
l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-l The improved folding chicken-coop, consisting of the hinged and slotted posts A, ridge-pole B, eentrally-hingcd bottom D, the flexible cover O, and the 4hinged triangular doorll, all arranged as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of mv invention signed by me this 16th day ot' March, 1870.
` JOHN R. AOHENBAOH.
