:FOLDING CRIB.
Application'faea August 7, 1925.v serial No. 48,897.
This invention relates to improvements in cribs for use more particularly by infants and small children.
@ne of the important objects of the present .invention is to provide a crib which when assembled will be entirely closed so as to prevent iiies, mosquitoes, and other insects -from reaching the occupantV of the crib.
A further Objectis to provide a crib which is of such construction as to enable the same to be readily and easily folded when not in use so as to occupy a minimum amount of space, a handle being associated therewith Ato facilitate the carrying of the foldedv crib from place to place, the crib being light in weight.
A still further obj ectis to provide afolding crib which includes a bottom bed section, in-folding side sections, and in-folding end sections, means being provided for holding the said hinged sections in an assembled position when the crib is set up for use, a pairof complementary cover sections being hingedly associated with the upper ends of the end sections for facilitating the closing of the top of the crib.
A still further object is to provide a folding crib of the above mentioned. character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of the Vinven-A tion will become apparent during the course 4of the following description taken in con- YVnection with the accompanying drawings.
of illustration is shown the preferred em-` bodiment of my invention, the numeral l designates generally my improved crib, the` same comprising the bottom bed section 2 which comprises a substantially rectangular frame 25, the-saine being covered with .tine wire mesh screening illustrated at 4. A
board :3 of the same length as the length of the fr ameB is secured along one of the longitudinal side Aedges of the frame, anda simi lar Vboard 6 is secured to the other longitudinal side edge of the frame, the' board vG being of a width less than the widthgoffthe board 5, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. Thepurpose of this construction will hereinafter be more fully described. Hingedly secured to the upper edgeof the board 5 is one lofthe side sections designated by the numeral 7, the same also'ciomprising a substantially rectangular frame which is covered with a fine wire mesh screen y9. This side section'isof the same length as the length of the board 5 'and Vthe hinge connection therefor is illustrated at 10.
'A similar side section 1l which also includes .the rectangular shaped frame 12, and which 1s covered with the line wire meshiscreen 13 is hingedly secured at its loweredge to the.
upper edge of the other' side board@ as' indicated at let. f i
` Hingedly securedto the upper edge'of one of the ends of thefbottom bed section frame 3 is the end section l5. This end section also f comprises a Vrectangular shaped frame designated by the numeral 16 which is covered lwith iinetwire screening 17, and the hinge connection'between this end section' and the bottom bed section is illustrated at 18.l l
A similar end section 19 is hingedly'supported on the upper edge of the other end of the frame of the bottom bedsection, and this last mentioned end section 19 also includes a substantially rectangular frame' 20 which has arwire mesh screening 21 affordingy va cover therefor." The hinge connectiondoet'weenthe end section19 and the respective end of thebottom bed section 2 is illustrated att22 with reference more particularlyito Figure 2. i
For the purpose of holding theinwardlyi" folding side sections andthe end sections respectively in a vertical assembled position,
there is provided on each of the end sections the pivoted latches or hooks suitable eyes or keepers 24 cooperate withthe respective latches or hooks being arrangedonv the respective ends ofthe side `sections as shown more clearly 1n Figure l.
A pair of com'L`)lementaryl cover designated by the numerals 25' and 26 respectively are hingedly secured at theirV outer ends tothe upper edges ofthe respective end sections 15 and19 respectively as indie'ctions,
cated at 2v7and ZSjresl'Jectively. Each of the f frame which is covered with wire screening,
the frame of the cover section 25 being designated by the numeral 29, and the screening therefor' indicated at 30. The frame of the other cover section 26 is indicated at 81, and the screening therefor is illustrated at 32. c
As is shown more clearly in Figure 2, the inner end of the frame 31 of the cover section 26 is provided with a longitudinally extending ledge 82, and the inner end of the complementary cover section has its frame provided with the cut out portion 33 whereby the ledge 32 will be received in the cut out portion 33 so that the inner opposed ends of the cover sections are arranged in intertitting relation. A lug or shoulder is formed on the inner face of the upper portion of each of the side frames at the intermediate portion thereof'an'd the interfitting ends of the cover sections rest on these shoulders so as to enable the cover sections to be maintainedV in theirv proper assembled relation and for holding the same in proper position against downward swinging movement.
For the purpose of locking the cover sections in their assembled position, there is provided on one of the cover sections, the pivoted latches or hooks 35, the same being adapted to engage in suitable eyes or keepers 36, carried by the upper edges of the respective side sections in the manner as shown r more clearly in Figure 1.
l rA seriesof transversely extending parallel spaced slats 37 are arranged on the frame 3 of the bottom bed section 2 and provide a means for receiving the beddingy so as to prevent the occupant of the crib from breaking the bottom screen 4. y
When the crib is in its assembled position, Ain the manner shown in Figure 1, access to the interior of the crib may be had by releasing the latches 35 from their respective eyes or keeper 36, andthcn swinging the cover sections 25 and 26 upwardly on their hinges 27 and 28 respectively. After the infant or child has been placed inthe crib, the cover sections are then swung downwardly to the posit-ion shown in Figures 1 and 2, and the latch members are locked thus'entirely enclosing ,they occupant of the crib. The screening associated with the several sections of the crib will prevent 'any possibility of flies, mosquitoes, and other insects reaching the infant or child.
VThe crib may be readily collapsed when not in use by disengaging the latches from their respective keepers, or eyes, and after these latches are unfastened, the cover sections are swung upwardly on their hinges 27 and 28, and after the cover sections are in the same plane with their respective end sections, said end sections are again swung inwardly on their hinges 18 and 22 respectively so that the end section 15 and its cover 25 will be disposed adjacent the bottom section 2 and the other end section 19 and its cover section 26 will extend over the aforementioned end section and its cover section as shown in the dotted lines in Figure 2.
The side section 11 is then swung inwardly on its hinges 14: so as to be disposed over the end section 19, and the cover 26. The other side section 7 is swung inwardly onits hinges 10 so as to be disposed in sulperposed relation, on top of the side section 11, and this is clearly illustrated in Figure lofthe drawings. In this manner, the hinged sections will be disposed in a folded position, Vand for the purpose of holding the sections in sucha position, there is provided the latch or hook 38 and the eye 'or keeper 39.
'By constructing the board 6 of a width less than the width of the board 5, the
hinged sections will be disposed in substan- A tially the same plane so as to be compact in arrangement, and to facilitate the carrying of the folded crib, there vis Aprovided a .handle 40 on the inter-mediate portion of thel board 5'. As the crib will be light in weight,
' readily, and easily folded, when not in use,
and may also readily be set up in position for use and when assembled, there will be no possibility of the parts accidentally collapsing and injuring the infant or 'child occupying the crib. p
lVhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention, and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described theinvention, what l claim as new is z- A folding crib comprising a bottom bed section, a pair of boards extending upwardly from the respective side edges of said bed section, one of said boards being of greater height than the other one, a pair of in-folding side sections hingedly secured at their lower edges to the upper edges of the respective side boards, said side sections being of unequal widths, a. pair of end sections hingedly secured at' their lower edges to the at theii-outer ends vto'ithe'npper edgesofy said end sections, the inner opposed free respective ends of thel bottom bed ysections and adapted to fold inwardly, a pair of complementary cover sections hingedly secured ends 0f the cover sections being provided `With coactingshoulders, lugs formed on thev 'inner sides of the intermediate portions Y fof the respective hinged side sections, 'ad
