Description

No. 841,995. PATENTED JAN. 22, 1907. H. J. MIBR & 1). BEAMBS.
HENS NEST AND HATOHING 0001 APPLICATION FILED JUNE 28.1906.
WITNESSES PETERS co., WASHINGTON, D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE J. MIER AND DAVID BEAMES, OF RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY.
HENS NEST AND HATCHINGQ-COOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, ISL/7.
Application filed June 28,1906. Serial No. 323,853.
To all wlwnt it may concern:
Be it known that we, HORAOE J. lVllER, a citizen of the United States, and DAVID BEAM ES, a subject of the King of Great Britain', residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hens Nests and Hatching-Coops, of which lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of our improved hens nest and hatching-coop; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a plan view.
Our improved hens nest. and hatchingcoop comprises a boxshape d base portion a and a roof portion 1). The box-shaped base portion a is provided with an open-work bottom 0 composed in theform of construction shown of wire-m esh, but which may be composed of any desired open-work material. The roof portion l comprises an open framework having an angular base 6 similar in form to the top of the box-shaped base portion a and preferably provided with two inclined sides having a waterproof covering 1) of any suitable material, and the roof portion I) is also provided with a horizontal top,
member 5", with which is connected a handle I), by means of which the device may be conveniently moved from one point to another. The opposite gable end portions 1) are composed of open-work members 6 preferably consisting of interwoven wire or similar material, said open-work members being hinged to the base-frame b of the roof portion, as shown at 5 so that they may be let down, as shown at the left of Fig. 2, or raised and locked in position, as shown at the right of said figure, and for this purpose said open- Work members 6 are provided with hooks c at the top thereof, adapted to engage catches, pins, or loop members (i, secured to the top of the roof portion 6. The roof portion 6 is detachahly connected with the base member a by means of hooks or similar fastening devices, as shown at e, in the form of construction shown, and in practice the base portion (L of the device is filled or partially filled with straw or other suitable material.
When the device is in use as an ordinary hens nest in which the hens may lay their eggs, the parts 6 may both be lowered, as shown at the left of Fig. 2, and when desired as, for instance, when a hen is settingeither or both of said parts b may be raised and locked in position, as shown at the right of Fig. 2, and said parts 7, or one of them, may
be lowered at any time, as shown at the left of Fig. 2, in order to allow the hen to temporarily leave her nest.
By providing the open-work bottom 12 for the base portion of the device the nest itself is thoroughly ventilated, and the said device my be placed on dry ground, and this is sometimes an advantage in devices of this class, or, if desired, the said device may be placed on an elevated support in such manner that the air will be free to circulate under and through the nest, and by providing openwork gable end members which may be locked in a closed position we also provide means for protecting the hen at night from prowling animals, and said open-work members when locked in the closed position also prevent interference with a setting hen by other fowls or other animals in the day-time.
Our improved hens nest and hatchingcoop may be made of any desired material and of any preferred form.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hens nest and hatchingcoop, com
prising a box-shaped base portion having an IIO prising a box-shaped base portion having an open-Work bottom and a roof portion provided With open-Work gable end members which are hinged to the base of the roof portion, said roof portion being detachably connected with the base portion, and the roof portion being provided at the top with a handle.
4. A hens nest and hatching-coop, comprising a boXshaped portion having a roof shaped top portion, said top portion being composed of a frame having inclined waterproof side and open-Work gable ends, said gable ends being hinged at the base of the top portion and provided With means for locking them in the closed position.
5. A hens nest and hatching-coop, comprising a box-shaped base portion and a top roof portion, said roof portion being provided 20 with inclined sides and gable ends, and the gable ends being composed of open-Work material and being hinged to the base of the top portion.
6. A hens nest and hatching-coop, comprising a box-shaped base portion and a top roof portion, said roof portion being provided With inclined sides and gable ends, and the gable ends being composed of open-work material and being hinged to the base of the top portion, said top portion being detachably connected With the base portion.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention We have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 27th day of June, 1906.
