SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,181, dated March 28, 1893. Application filed April 28, 1892. Serial No. 431,068. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ERNEST B. Voss,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Exira, in the county of Audubon and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Hen- Coop, of which the following is a specification.

My object is to provide a cheap and durable compartment for fowls, while hatching and rearing a brood, the parts of which are all readily accessible for purposes of cleaning, removing the fowls, (he, and constructed in such a manner as to occupya minimum of space.

My invention consists in the construction arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device, with one end remot'ed to reveal its internal construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the line w a: of Fig. 2.

Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference letter A is used to designate the outer casing or frame of the device, comprising the bottom, front, back, and ends. This frame is elevated above the ground surface by means of the supports B.

0. represents the roof or cover of the device hinged at its forward edge to the frontof the frame A by means of the hinges 0 This roof is preferably inclined as required to shed mm.

D D are strips secured to the inside of the side pieces of the frame in the top of each compartment and D are lattice coverings formed of wooden strips resting on the said strips and removable therefrom at pleasure. This it will be seen will allow the roof 0 to be opened during favorable weather, for purposes of ventilation, &c., and serve to confine the fowls.

F represent nests secured to the inner back portion of the frame and F a ven tilating port in proximity thereto.

H represents the lower portion of the front of the frame. It is hinged at its under edge to swing outwardly and serve as an approach and platform to the device.

H is a lattice covering the opening formed thereby and having an exit H at its bottom of such a size as to exclude full grown fowls and to allow of the smaller fowls to pass therethrough.

J represents partitions extending transversely of the device to divide it into separate compartments.

I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the number of compartments used or to the size of its various parts. I

In practical use I first place the fowls upon the nest, and provide them with food and drink by removing the cover, after the brood is hatched, the young are allowed to run upon the floor of the brooding compartments and when desired the approach may be lowered and the young fowls allowed to run out.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination in a brooding hen coop, of an open-topped casing or frame, a hinged cover therefor, vertical partitions to divide the casing or frame into separate compartments, a nest secured to the back of each compartment, a lattice in the front of each compartment adapted to exclude full grown fowls and permit younger ones to pass therethrough, the front of the said casing or frame being divided horizontally, and hinged at its under edge to swing outwardly and serve as an approach or platform and a support for elevatingthe device above the ground surface substantially as set forth.
