To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD J. JARDIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Beds and Stretchers, of which the following is a speciication.

This invention relates to combination beds and stretchers and its object is to provide a new and novel arrangement `for hospitals or household use whereby an invalid may be provided with a bed or may be transported to some other locality without being molested and put to serious inconvenience by handling or being obliged to leave his bed. These and other details and objects of the invention will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings, where:

It is frequently necessary to remove an invalid from his bed to one in another locality and to do so it is necessary to lift him from the bed to a stretcher on which he is carried to the new bed in which he is placed. This requires several handlings of the patient and the excitement and annoyance caused by same are often not only painful but injurious.

The present invention is designed to provide for the removal of an invalid to other beds or quarters without disturbing him or occupying much time in doing same and the invention consists of a bed made up ot` the usual head and foot pieces 10 and 11 having secured to them rigidly the brackets 12 to which are pivoted the sectional side pieces made up of the two parts 13 and 14 pivoted together by a pin 15. ln the piece 13 is a slot 16, curved on the arc of a circle whose center is the pin 15, and in this slot plays a pin 17 of the piece 14 and which permits of the folding of the bed as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 only to a greater extent and limits the movement ol the parts to hold them in a horizontal position when desired. As shown in Fig. 5 the sections are locked in their horizontal position by the pin 18 and perforated spring 19 secured to each bracket and when it is necessary to release same the spring is lifted until the pin is disengaged from the hole therein.

The stretcher normally plays the part of a mattress on the bed and the handles may be dropped so as to be out of the way. The cross bars 21 rest on the side bars of the bed or the brackets and the bed must be extended for use.

Tt is very olten necessary in case ot operations to place the invalid in an inclined position. This may be easily done with this device by resting the cross bar 21 on the head or toot piece or the bar may be hung 'from same at the desired height by means ot links and hooks.

Tn case that it is necessary to temporarily remove the stretcher from the bed the handles 24 may be used as legs to supportthc stretcher above the floor.

lt is obvious that the construction of the details may be modified or otherwise arranged without departing from the essential features above described.
