STORM-GOAT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VALTER S. BARKER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Storm-Coats, of which the following is a specification.

Storm-coats of ordinary construction having two overlapping front portions, provided with fastenings for attaching them together, do not protect the wearer against a driving storm or high wind, which finds its way to the wearer between the overlapping front portions. The employment of a stor1nshield or additional overlapping portion attached to one of the front portions, and adapted to extend over the other front portion, assists in preventing the storm or wind from passing between the front portions, but does not entirely exclude it.

This invention has for its object the provision of means whereby the passage between. the overlapping front portions is eiiectively closed, and is attained by arranging flaps 011 the overlapping portions, adaptcd to be interlocked to close said passage.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stor1ncoat embodying this invention, it having three (Werlapping portions. one of which is intended as a storm-shield, a part of the outer overlapping portion being broken away to expose the intermediate overlapping portion beneath it, and a part of said intermediate overlapping portion also being broken away to expose the interlocking flaps. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional detail of a portion of the coat shown in Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line 2-2. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional detail. the fasteners by which one of the interlocking flaps is attached to one of the overlapping portions being omitted. Figs. 4: and 5 are similar transverse sectional details of modifications wherein the outer overlapping portion is arranged to serve as a storm-shield. Figs. 6 and 7 are similar transverse sectional details of another modified form of my invention.

of the overlapping portion 6, and thereby serve as a storm-shield. Thus this partieular form of coat to which my invention is applied has three overlapping portions at the front. Any suitable number aswell as kind of fastenings may be employed, or, if deemed necessary, they may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 3.

Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, the overlapping front portions are arranged in a. different manner, the overlapping portion 0, which serves as a storm-shield. being arranged on the outside instead of on the inside. as shown in Figs. 1 to 3. In such case the interlocking members or flaps b, a, may be arranged respectively on the portions a and Z). see Fig. 1; or on the portions (1 and 0, see Fig.

Referring to Figs. 6 and 7 only the two overlapping portions (6 and b are employed, and the interlocking flaps b, 0, are arranged on said portions, as, for instance, the flap a may be made as a strip and secured to the back side of the portion a, and the flap Z) formed by turning over the edge of the portion Z), and in this instance, if desired, one of the interlocking flaps, as b, may be provided with fastening-means for engaging fastening-means on the portion a.

One way of buttoning up or fastening the coat is shown in 6, wherein the por tion (a is turned outward and the interlocking flap 7) first attached to said portion a, then said portion a and flap b are turned back upon the portion 7), see Fig. 7 and the portion a attached to the portion 6.

I claim:

1. A coat having overlapping portions at the front, and interlocking flaps, one arranged on the back side of one of said portions, and the other on the front side of an adjacent portion, and extended toward each other and adapted to be overlapped to effectively close the passage between said overlapping portions substantially as described.

2. A coat having overlapping portions at. the front provided with interlocking flaps, which extend one over the other to close the passage between the overlapping portions bearing them, and two sets of fasteners one for the overlapping portions and the other for one of the overlapping portions and one of the interlocking flaps, substantially as de' scribed.

3. A coat having overlapping portions at I the front provided with interlocking flaps which extend one over the other to close the passage between the overlapping portions bearing them, and means for securing the overlapping portions together with flaps interlocked substantially as described.

4. A storm-coat having overlapping por tions at the front, one having a flap with a reflexed portion, and the other having a reflexed portion which overlaps the aforesaid reflexed portion, substantially as described.
