AMERICUS R. UNDERDOWN, OF I-IADDONFIELD, NEV JERSEY.
WATERPROOF COAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,440, dated November 29, 1904.
Application iled February 2, 1903. Serial No. 141,479. (No model.
T L7/Z whom it may concern: n
Be it known that I, AMERIoUs R. UNDER- DowN, acitizen of the United States, residing in Haddonfield, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Waterproof Coats, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a waterproof coat as to prevent leak- Y age of water between the overlapping sides of the front of the coat.. This object I attain by providing each of the meeting edges of the sides of the coat with a pair of flaps which a double overlap-closure which is proof against leakage.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of a waterproof coat constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same unfastened in front. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view showing the relation of the parts when the sides of the coat have been fastened together; and Fig. 3 is a section, on a larger scale, of the aps of one side of the coat.
The right-hand side 1 of the coat has along its inner edge an inner flap 2 and an outer Hap 3, and the left-hand side 4 of the coat is likewise provided along its inner edge with an inner iiap 5 and an outer flap 6, the said flaps 3 and 6 carrying the fastening devices, so that in closing the front of the coat the flap 5 is first laid over the flap 2, the flap 3 is then laid over the flap 5, the flap 6 is iinally caused to overlap the flap 3, and said flaps 3 and 6 are then securedin position, as shown in Fig. 2. By this means a double overlap is provided, the flaps being so closely interlocked that the closure is proof against leakage, no matter how violent the storm of wind or rain to which the wearer is subjected.
Any available form of fastening may be employed; butin the drawings I have shown that type of fastening which consists of an eye 7 on one iiap and a pivoted hook 8 on the other` since this form of fastening device does not, as would a button-and-buttonhole fastening, require the formation in either iiap of openings through which leakage could take place. This fasteningdoes not, moreover, as would an ordinary hook and eye, permit a partial pulling apart of the flaps as the hook slips into the eye. Hence a snug fit of the iiaps to .one another is permitted and maintained. interlock with those of the other side and form The flap 3 is preferably stiifened at and near its edge by providing it with a lining-piece 9, as shown in Fig. 8, so that it will not be liable to wrinkle and open a gap between it and the flap 6 when the wearer of the coat bends over or sits down.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A waterproof coat having each side of the front of the same provided on its edge with a pair ofiiaps forming a double interlocking overlap, the inner flaps of each side of the coat being imperforate throughout, and the outer flaps heilig' provided with fastenings comprising eyes on one iiap and pivoted leverhooks on the otherflap for engaging said eyes, said hooks and eyes being so disposed that when the same are in engagement the inner flaps will overlap each other to the full extent and will be retained in such position, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AMERICUS R. UNDERDOWN.
