Description

K. A. F. HIORTH.
ELECTRIC INDUCTION SMELTING FURNACE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 18,1910.
vw 1 y I j //A To all whom it'may concern:
UNITED sTA ns PATENT OFFICE.
KARL ALBERT FREDRIK HIORTH, OF CHRISTIANIA, NORWAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ELECTRIC INDUCTION SMELTING-FURNACE.
Application filed May 18, 1910. Serial No. 562,045.
Be it known that I, KARL ALBERT FREDRIK HIoRTrI, a subject of the King of Norway,
residing at Christiania, Norway, .have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Induction smelting-Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, and to letters or'figures of re erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In electric induction smelting furnaces, in which the rimary winding is located between the furnace roove and the magnet core, it is impossib e to use large charges,
because the stray loss becomes great when the diameter of the furnace and thereby the space between the furnace groove and the magnet core is increased. According to the present invention this is avoided by making the magnet core or part of it hollow and consequently enabling itto-be formed with so large diameter, that it will be comparatively near to the furnace groove.
. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a diagrammatic longitudinal vertical section of a furnace embodying my invention.
1 indicates the furnace groove, 2 the portion of the magnet core located within said groove 1, which portion in the drawing has the form of a drum or a cylinder.
3 indicates the primary winding.
The invention is especially applicable to furnaces of such size that the stray field around the primary, between the magnet and the bath, becomes important for the action of the furnace. When using a hollow magnet and placing the primary Winding between the magnet and the bath the bestpossible ma etic action is obtained.
The drawin is only to be considered as a diagram, in icating theprinciple of the invention; the invention may of course be carried out in different ways.
Claim.-
In an electric furnace, the combination of an annular furnace groove, a hollow mag net core disposed inside the furnace and a primary winding disposed between the hollow core and the furnace roove.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KARL ALBERT FREDRIK HIORTH.
