WILLIAM'M. SMIT-11, or AUGUST-1i, esonera.
Leam- Patea No.. 97,977, dated Dmmbe- 14, 1369.
IMPROVMNT IN' COTTON-BALB. TIES.
The'chedule referred -to'in these Letten atent 'and making .parrot the sama.
To all lwhom ritnmy concern:
Be it known thatl, WILLIAM M. SMITH, ofgthe city of'Angnsta, in thecounty of Richmond, and State of Georgia`, have invented a new and improved Cotton-Bale Tie; and that the following is afull, clear,
and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciii'cation, in .whichj i Figure 1 represents in perspective the tie uniting the two ends .of an iron band, as when appliedin binding cotton-bales. Figure 2 represents the tieY as it -shouldbe adjl'isted to the band, preparatory to uniting the two vends of the same together.
Figure 3 represents Vthe tie unitingthe twoends of the iron baud, but'not entirely adjusted.
'Similar letters of reference, where they occurfin the separategures, denote like parts in all thcdrawf ings.
My invention relates toan. improvement in. cotton or other bale-ties; and .consist-sof a fiat rectangular piece of'iron, having a square opening through the centre, slightly larger than the width of the iron band,- and a Y; shaped slot through one of it-s sides, for 'the better adjustment. of said band. v
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will'proceed to desciibe the construction of the same, with reference to the drawings.
A' A A"A{"represent the four corners of a ltiat Ipiece of iron, A, of an even surface, andabout two inches square by an eight-li of an inch thick. Y B B" B 13" represent the four corners of'a square hole, B, cut in the middle of said piece. The sides of the said holel should always be made to,- exceed in i length, very slightly, the width of the`- iro1 1 oi other metallic band designed to 'be usedin combination with -said piece.
f (l represents 'a of piece A., One sideof said aperture, marked x, is made blunt at the end, as seen at a.
The opposite side, x', is pointed,as seen at a', to prevent the band' slipping out of the tie during the final adjustment of the same around the bale.
When the piece-Als made of flat iron, the aper Y -'shaped aperture, cut in one side i ture should always be madeasrepresented in jigs. V1,
2, and .3, in order to facilitate the passage of the looped ends of the iron band D D into the hole B, and the proper adjustment of the tie, as seen indig. l.v
Tounite, properly, the two' ends of the. iron band D D, aro`und-a cotton. or other bale, with the piece A A" A" A, bend andinterlock one end of said band with said piece, as represented in fig. 2, pass the other ,end aroun the bale, and ascertain, bymeasurement with the and, its excess in length 'over the circumference of the bale to which it is being applied;v bend vinwardly the end` of the band in excess,Y bring-the two ends together, and unite the last end bent, by passing the loop thus made horizontally, either tothe right or to the left, as may be' necessary, through aperture (l n into-the square vhole-B; retract and interlock 'the two .ends of said bandwitlr said piece, as represented in ig.'3. 'After thus uniting the two ends of the baud with the piece A, take hold, with the' left hand, of the upper left-hand corner of the same, as indicated by thearrow in iig; 3, holding at thesame-time, with. the right hand, the other end ofthe hand, below. the tic.y
'lhcn bring the two ends-together, and turn the tie inthe direction.indicatedby thepointingarrw, until the aperture G passes undcrfthe looped endof, baud 1)l D, as fully 'represented in iig. l, which completos" the proper adjustment ofthe tie-when uniting the lendsof the band D-D, as applied in binding cattolibales.
The aperture C should be 'cnt of'sntncient width .only, to admit freely intothe hole B, the looped ends of the .ba1i1lD.D. When the. looped ends oi' baudD have -been united,- as represented ,inviig. 3,'by means of the tie 4under consideration,l andv the attemptis made to adjust-the same, as lierctoibre'directed, the
edge o the looped end. of said band will pass as freeiy over the slot C as if Jit wera not in the piece' A. This -result is -attainedby the peculiar construction oft-he 4slot C.
.It may be observed, that the interior-corner d, of the slot G,.is cut oli', and the oppositecorner, a', presents an acute angle.
In turning the piece A, as d irectedLvot' g.3, until adjusted ,as represented' in iig.; l, the edge of the looped end of bandl) will-drop from the acute' corner a', upon theincline made by cut-.ting on" the corner a, and-pass the slot C without the least interruption. Any other construction of said, slot would certainly result in perplexing delay.
It was purposely conceived-aud executed in the coil-V struction of the piece A, that the dir'iicnsions of the square hole B should be made to exceed, very slightly' vided with a vV or X-shaped slot-, for these I` know to' be old; but v What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is J v An improvement upon rectangular cotton-bale ties,
with V br X-shaped slots, said improvement consisting instriking oit the intcriorpoint or angle a, while. ythe point or angle af is left entire, for the ready and secure adjustment of the loop-band D. as herein shown and described.
