Description

arma sans f Remnant No. 97,812, daad Damm 14, 1869.
. IMPRQVEMENT IN PADLOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pvart of the same To all 'whom ita-my conce/rn:
gan, haveinvented a new and improvedPadlook; and I do hereby'` declare that the following is a full, clear, and 4exact description thereof, whieh will enable others skilledin the art to 'make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'forming partj ot' this specification.
The object of this iinventionis to provide a simple, cheap, and etlicient constructionand arrangement of the locking and operating-parts of padloeks.
y The invention consists in ail improved and simple" compound tumbler-bolt, and relative arrangement thereot with the bow and bow-spring, all as herein-V "and Figure 3 represents av transverse section, taken on the line a: x.
Similar letters ot' reference. indicate corresponding arts. y
,'lhe tumblers A are pivoted at B, and provided with extensions for engaging and looking the bow D; They `have also projections, E, curved from the pivot B as a centre, and arranged, `relatively to a projection lidrointhe pivoted` end of the bow, which is pressed against the said projections E by a spring, G, for throwing out the bow, so that when unlocking, the
. said spring is prevented -from/acting ou lthe bow until the projections are withdrawn from the lockingnotch in the swinging end of the said bow.
H represents eoncavities in the said tumblers, which Be it known that I, JOHN S; RANKIN, of Ann Arr bor, inthe county of Washtcnaw, and State of Michimerge Vin the convex curvature of the projection E,
at I Y This point passes beyond the projection F, at the moment the projections() escape from vthe notch in the bow, and this gives liberty to the projection F to be thrown ont by the spring G.
In locking, the projection F, acting on theconcavities in the tumblers, 'retracts them, when the bow is pressed in, before the said projection escapes the point I, which permits th`e bow to be passed in, and the tu inblerfsprings K to throw the tumblers forward, locking it. Y
L represents a key-hole guard-plate. `As manyl of these tumblers may he used as required,"and the part-s thereof against which-.the key l l works may be in any irregular order, to make it diiiiy cult to fit a key, or other device, for picking the lock;
and the tumblers are so arranged, relatively to the arm Ii, and a stud, M, of the ease, or other stop, that theynrust all be brought fairly down against t-he said stud before the arm will be permitted to be thrown up g by the spring G, and this can only be done by a key exactly fitted.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A spring-actuated pivoted tumbler, A, having project-ion O, recess H,iand convexity E, in combination with a pivoted bow D, having locking recess at one`
