ToALL WHoM 1T MAY ooNcERN:
Be it known that. I, NASH CEEK, of Chapel Hill, in the county of Orange, and'State of North Carolina, have invented a new and improvedAlarm-Lock; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, hereinafter'referrcd to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the natureand ,principles of my said improvements, by whichmyinvention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with` such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to-me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to a lock, of simple construction, which is designed to be unpickable, and capable of being applied in all cases where an ordinary lock may be used, and in combining with said lock an alarm, all arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described. i
The accompanying drawing represents an internal view of my improved loch/with the alarm attached.
`A represents the case -ot' the lock, which may be of.V the lusual rectangular form, and B is the bolt, fitted withinthe case' in suitable guides, and having a spring, C, bearing against its upper edge, which, spring has 'a tendency, when the bolt is shoved outward, to keep a notch, a, in the lower edge of the bolt, on the lower part of the back guide b of the bolt, so as to involve the' necessity. of raising the back part of the holt before it can Y he shoved back.
In the back part of the bolt B there is a. hole, c, which, when the bolt is shoved forward and the lock locked, receives a pin', d, at the end of a spring, D, which is secured within the case A." The elasticity -of the spring D keeps the pin @Zin the hole cfofthe bolt B, and saidpin consequently must be removed from o'rshoved 4out of the hole c-before the bolt can be shoved hack.
This result is effected by the bit of the key, which, as it is'turned in the lock, presses upon the spring D,
`and throvrsitsfpin d out from the hole in -the bolt justY previous to the bit entering-al notch,y e, in the bolt, by
which the inner end ofthe bolt is raised. free from thc rear guide 6, and the'holt thrown back and the lock unlocked. i i
In the lock-case A there is a circular chamber, E, in which the hit of the key, works, and there is also Y within the lock-case a lever, FX, yhaving its fulcrum atf, and its lower end connected by a link, g, with a lever, li, whose lower end is 'pivoted to the bar a', which passes Ithrough an opening in' the lock-case.
E represents the door or shutter to which the lock is applied, and F is a sliding bar attached thereto, and having a. lever, G, connected to its upper end by `a pivot, j, the fulcrum of said le-verheing ataX.
On one end oi' this lever 'a spring, lc, bears, andthe opposite end is provided with a'tooth, which `catches into a toothed wheel, H, the shaft I of which has a cord, J, attached, with a weight, K,vat its lower end.
This shaft I-has a drum, L, upon it, provided with radial teeth m,vwhich, when the shaft is rotated, come in contact with an arm, L', on a'shaft, M, to which a bell-hammer, N, is attached. Q he shaft M has a spring, O, connected to it, which `spring hasla tendencyv to throw the hammer Lin contact with the hell P, the hammer being thrown hack .from the hell by the action of the teeth m against the arm L of the shaft M.
The tooth l of lever G serves to retain the wheel I-I, and prevent the weight K from rotating it when the cord J is wound-upon the shaft I. A
The bar F has a pin, n, projecting from it, and Q is a gun or pistol attached to the shutter or door, in such a positign that the pin n4 will be in front of its trigger o when the lock is locked, and the bar F is held upward by a notch, p, in its lower end, receiving a pin, q, inthe shutter erdoor, as shown in the drawing.
The operation is as follows: When the lock is in a locked state, the pin g in the recess or notch p in the` bar F,Iand the cord 'J wound upon the shaft I', the alarm is set,an d it will be seen that when the'bolt B is thrown back, and the lock unlockeda lip, bx, on .the bolt will strike lever FX,.and the bar t' will be moved, and strike the bar F and `throw it o' 'or free from the pin q, and the spring k will then, by its pressure on'lever G, throwi down the bar F and raise the'tooth l from thewheel H. The weight .K will then, of course, rotate the shaft I, and the bell P- willl be sounded. The gun or pistol Q will also be fired, in consequence of the pin 'n striking the trigger o when the bar F is forceddown.
In addition to these alarms, an ordinary bell, R, provided with a' cla'pper, r, maybe attached to the end of the shaft M. The shaft M is provided witha'n arm, s, to come in contact with a pin or stop, t, inthe shutter Vor door E.
Only one or all of these alarms may bc used, as desired.
. In order to prevent the insertion of a key into the lock from the outer side of the door, a slideplate, S,
may be placed within the lock, and operated by a lever, '.l. A
This slide-plate is not new, however, and may be seen in various locks. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The lever EX, connected with the bar z', as shown, in combination with the sliding bar F at theouter sidev ofthe lock, and attached to the shutter or door, and arranged so as to operate an alarm, substantially as shown ,and described.
2. The lever G, pivoted to the bar F, in connection with the spring k, toothed wheel II, cord J, and weight K o'r an equivalent, arms m .on the drum of the shaft I, shaft M with arm L and bell-hammer N attached,
spring O .and bell P, all arranged' and combined to operate in connection with the lock, substantially as set forth.
