KEYHOLE-GUABD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1915.
Application filed July 11, 1914. Serial No. 850,364.
To (1 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIAs Coinuinn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Keyhole- Guards, of which the following is a specification. 7
The invention relates to looks, and more especially to the class of key operated looks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock wherein on inserting the key therein the same cannot be manipulated from the side of the lock remote from the key, thus rendering the said lock safe, and avoiding the possibility of operating the same surreptitiously.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock wherein the keyhole therein carries a guard which closes the keyhole to prevent a person peeping therethrough from either side of the look.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock wherein the construction thereof is of novel form to avoid the possibility of manipulating the lock other than by the key intended therefor, and also which will obviate the possibility of the removal of the key from the side of thelock opposite the side in which the key is inserted.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a lock wherein the mechanism thereof is arranged in compact form, and is so constructed to simplify the working of the lock, yet rendering it safe and practically burglar-proof.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a lock which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lock constructed in accordance with the invention, showing one of the cheek plates partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the casing of the lock, showing the locking mechanism in detail. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. A is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view o'f'the keyhole guard. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the barrel for receiving the key and carrying the guard. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the locking bolt and the cooperating tumblers. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the key for operating the lock. Fig. 9 is a sectional view on the line 9-9 of Fig. 2.
bimilar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the lock comprises acasing 5'having a removable cheekor cover plate 6, and also provided with a face plate 7, the; latter being formed with a suitable opening through which slides the locking bolt 8 which is controlled and operated in a manner presently described. The removable cheek or cover plate 6 is fastened to the casing in'any suitable manner which, together with the stationary or permanent check or cover plateof the said casing, are formed with annular grooves 9 in their inner faceswhich are disposed concentrically to the keyhole 10, and into these grooves 9 are projected the circular flanges 11 on the ends of a peripherally grooved key receiving barrel' 12 which is rotatably supported within the casing 5, the said barrel being formed with a key receiving slot 13 in which is fitted a keyhole guard 14 which is slidable throughout the length of the slot and is adapted to close the keyhole 10 in opposite sides of the casing so as to prevent peeping therethrough, the guard being formed with a stop lug 15 which is adapted to engage in a notch 16 formed in the inner face of each cheek plate above the keyhole 10 therein so that the turned to manipulate the locking mecha nism hereinafter fully described.
The sliding bolt 8 is formed with a cutaway portion 18 in each side thereof, and in these portions work pivotally supported tumblers 19 which swing upon a pivot 20 mounted in the bolt 8 and common to the said tumblers, which extend into the peripheral groove 21 formed in the key barrel or cylinder 12 so that the key when inserted therein will lift or operate the tumblers for the successive working of the lock. Fixed in the sides of the bolt 8 and working against the tumblers 19 are leaf springs 22 which serve to resiliently hold the tumblers in operative relation to the barrel or cylinder 12, while formed in the bolt 8 are vertical guide grooves 23 which are in opposite sides thereof, in which slidably fit the stems or looking detents 25, the stems being connected to the tumblers 19 by means of pivots 26, while the opposite ends of the said detents are formed with heads '27 provided with depending locking teeth 28, the same being adapted'to engage in a stationary locking rack 29 fixed in the casing 25 above and parallel with the bolt 8 so that the detents 25 will engage the rack and lock therewith when the bolt is moved to locked or unlocked position.
The locking bolt 8 between the tumblers 19 is formed with a rib 30 having a notch 31 in which engages the bit 32 of the key 33 when the tumblers 19 are acted upon by the bit 32 for raising the detents 25 to release the bolt 8 so that it may be thrown to lock-' ing or unlocking position on the turning of the key 33 when inserted in the barrel or cylinder '12, Which is designed to rotate therewith. Fixed in the permanent or stationary'cheek of the casing'5 is a leaf spring 34, the bowed end 35 of which engages the flared end 36 of the slot 13 in the barrel or cyli'nderl2 to frictionally hold the latter in a position so that its slot 13 will aline with the keyhole 10 in the cheek plates of the casing, and also will 'p'reventthe free rotation .of the barrel or cylinder 12, yet permit ting the key to rotate the same when engaged therein. The guard 14 is formed at opposite sides with center pins or lugs 37, each of which is adapted to engage in a socket 38 formed in the bit end of the key 33 to steady the key and center it within the barrel or cylinder 12 when engaged therein for manipulating the lock.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and there fore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
WVhat is claimed is 1. In a lock, a casing, locking mechanism arranged therein, a key receiving barrel rotatably supported within the casing, a key insertible therein for controlling the looking mechanism, a keyhole guard slidably fitted in the barrel to close either end thereof on the insertion of the key in the barrel, means acting upon the barrel to prevent free rotation thereof, and means on the guard and engageable with the casing to hold the same stationary on the rotation of the barrel by the key.
2. In a lock, a casing, locking mechanism arranged therein, a key receiving barrel rotatably supported Within the casing, a key insertible therein for controlling the locking mechanism, a keyhole guard slidably fitted in the barrel to close either end thereof on the insertion of the key in the barrel, means acting upon the barrel to prevent free rotation thereof, means on the guard and enga-geable with the casing to hold the same stationary on the rotation of the barrel by the key, and means on the guard for centering the key in the barrel.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
