Attorneys BENJAMIN VI GDAL, OF ARMSTRONG, IOWA.
nocxme CAN-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Application filed September 22, 1810. Serial No. 583.289.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN VIGDAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Armstrong, in the county of Emmet and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Locking Gan-Cover, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the. resent invention to provide an improved loc ing device for the covers of milk cans and similar containers and one of the primary objects of the present invention is to so construct the locking means that it will not be in the way and will permit of the handle of the cover being grasped as readily as the ordinary handle.
Another object is to provide a locking means for a can or similar cover which means is mounted upon the handle for the cover and has formed through overlying parts, openings which register with each other and with an o ening formed through the cover handle, it Being intended that the hasp of a ad lock or the wire of a seal shall be secure through these openings so in the first instance, to prevent removal of the cover without unlocking the lock, and, in the second instance, to prevent removal of the cover without destruction of the seal.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the general construction and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a to plan view of a container cover provided. w1th the locking device embodyin the present invention, the locking device %eing shown in full lines in position to lock the cover to the container and in dotted lines in position to permit of removal of the cover from the container. -Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the cover and the locking device.
In the drawings, there is shown a cover such as is used on the ordinary milk can and this cover is indicated in general by the reference numeral 5, it being rovided upon its upper side with the usua handle 6 of ordinary form except that it includes an extension 7 upon which the locking device embod ing the )resent invention is to be mounte as'will epresently ex lained.
At diametrically opposite points, t 0 wall of the body of the cover. 5 is formed with openings indicated by the numeral 8, these openings being located beyond the ends of the handle 6 upon the cover for a urpose which will be presently explained.
upon the said wall of the cover body at each openin is a guide 9. A locking bolt 10 and a ocking bolt 11 are slidably fitted at their outer ends through the guides 9 and in position to project through the correspond- -1ng openings 8. Inwardly of their said ends,
the bolts are preferably flat and at their inner ends they are pivoted as at 12 and 13 respectively, to the under side of an operating handle 14. This handle is pivoted, as at- 15, at a point between the pivots 12 and 13, to the extension 7 of the handle, the pivot 15 being located also nearer one end of the handle 14 than the other end thereof.
It will be observed from an inspection of the drawings that the bolt-10 is considerably longer than the bolt 11 and that the former bolt extends over the handle 6 of the cover and that when the operating handle is in the full line position shown in Fig. l of the drawings, it overlies the said bolt 10. At this po1nt is will be readily understood that by swinging the handle lever from full to dotted line position shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the bolts 10 and 11 will be drawn toward each other, enerall speaking, and at their outer on s will lie withdrawn from the openings 8 although they will retain their engagement inthe uides 9. When the bolts are thus retracted, t e cover may be removed from the container .which it'closes and upon reinsertion in the mouth or neck of the container and a return of the operating handle to full line position shown in Fig. 1, will be securely locked against such removal, it being of course understood that the mouth or neck of the container is formed with openings or with sockets for the engagement of the outer ends of. the bolts 10 and 11,. said sockets b'ein indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings %)y the numeral 16. It will be observed, further, from an inspection of Fig. l of the drawings that inasmuch as the bolt 10 extends above the handle 6 and in fact rests thereon, and the operating handle 14 is arranged to overlie the bolt 10, when the cover is locked to the container, the locking device embodyin these several elements will in no way inter ere with the grasping of the cover handle and furthermore the elements of the locking -device will be protected against in jury to a reater or less degree. The operating handle 14 is formed, near its end opposite its pivoted end, with an opening 17 which registers with an. opening 18 formed in the bolt 10 when the bolt and handle are in the full line position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Also, the handle (5 is formed with an opening indicated by the numeral 19 and this opening registers with the opening 18. As a consequence when the cover has been locked to the container which it is designed to close, the hasp of a padlock 20 or any other suitable lockingor sealing device may be secured through the openings 17, 18 and 19 and the operating handle either'held positively against move- 4 ment to position to retract the bolt or prevented from being so moved without indicating this fact. v What is claimed is: A container cover coinprisin a body, a handle upon the body, bolts shdable upon the handle, the bolts at their outer ends be ing arranged to cooperate with the neck of a container upon which the cover is fitted, and an operating handle pivoted to the inner ends of the bolts and to the handle at a point between the first mentioned pivots, the handle, when the bolts are extended, being arranged to overlie one of the bolts, the said handle, the said bolt which it overlies, and the handle upon the cover being formed with openings adapted to register when the bolts are extended. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN VIGDAL.
