This invention relates to countainer covers and it is particularly directed to al locking mechanism for such covers, whereby the same may be hermetically sealed.
In shipping goods such as milk, 1t 1s frequently the case that the can tops become loosened due to jarring and striking other articles on the trains, and leaking occurs. Further than this, it has been found that the can tops frequently freeze in place and it becomes extremely difficult to loosen and remove them without damage to the can.
This invention is designed to overcome the defects noted above, and objects of such invention are to provide a novel construction of can and locking mechanism for the top thereof, so that this mechanism not only locks the top in place, but also provides means which serves to knock the can top free from the can and partially elevate it so that it may be easily removed.
More specifically, further objects of this invention are to provide a construction of locking means and can such that the bail has a double cam action, one cam portion serving to lock and force the top into place, and the other serving to force the top up wardly away from the can, and to provide means adapted to receive a seal so that the bail cannot be manipulated.
Further detailed objects of this invention are to provide a construction in which the bail is held out of the way so that no damage can come to the apparatus even during severe use,
An embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the open portion of a can with parts broken away and in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. The left-hand portion of the bail being shown in full.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the can 1 is provided with a neck 2, preferably reinforced by a relatively heavy bail 3. The neck portion carries a pair of guiding members 4, provided with upstanding spaced lugs 5, between which the projecting ends 6 of a handle 7 for the top are adapted to slide. This top is indicated by the reference character 8 and is provided with an over-hanging edge, preferably carrying a gasket 9 and adapted to seal against the down-turn upper edge of the neck when the top is forced into the neck. the handle 7 is provided with centering orl position arms 10, which are secured within the depressed portion of the top, as shown in Figure 2. n
A bail 11 is pivoted by means of screws 12 which extend therethrough and into the neck portion -of the can, preferably through the reinforcing band 3. These screws serve as pivot points for the bail and may be shouldered as indicated in Figure 2, and provided with spacing washers 13.
The bail is provided with two cam portions, one of which is indicated by the reference character 14- and shown in Figure 2, and the other of which is indicated by reference character 15.
The cam faces 14 engage the upper side of the projecting lugs 6 of the top and thus force the top downwardly when the bail is rocked into the position shown in Figure 1; that is to say, downwardly toward the neck of the can. The other cam members 15 engage the under-side of the lugs 6 when the bail is rocked into'a vertical position,
and thrusts the top upwardly, freeing itfrom the neck of the can. This action takes place although the top may be frozen in place, as there is considerable leverage afforded by this construction. It is preferably to provide the neck of the can with an apertured clip 16 so that the bail may be locked to the clip by means of a suitable seal.
It will be seen that a simple and novel form of construction has been provided, which will lock a'can top securely in place and hold it locked until the bail is raised. It will be seen further that a double cam is. provided for the locking or freeing of the top from the neck of the can.
It is to be noted further, that the construew tion is very simple and occupies very little space on the can, and in addition to this the bail is out of the way when the can is locked closed.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
We claim:
1. The combination of a container having a neck, a cover fitting said neck and having a pair of projecting lugs, a bail pivoted to said neck and having a pair of double cam faces, one pair of faces engaging the upper face of the lugs to force the top down when the bail is swung towards the container, and the other pair of cam faces engaging the un'- der face of lugs for forcing the cover upwardly with respect to said neck when the hail is swung upwardly.
2. The combination of a container having a neck, a cover fitting said neck and having a pair of projecting lugs, a bail pivoted to said neck and havinga pair of double cam faces, one pair of faces engaging the upper face of the lugs to force the top down when the hail is swung towards the container, and the other pair of cam faces engaging the under face of lugs for forcing the cover upwardly with respect to said neck when the hail is swung upwardly, said neck having a pair of notched guides for guiding said lugs.
3. The combination of a container having a neck, a cover fitting said neck and having a pair of projecting lugs', a bail pivoted to said neck and having a pair of double cam faces, one pair of faces engaging the upper face of the lugs to force the top down when the bail is swung towards the container, and the other pair of cam faces engaging the under face of lugs for forcing the cover up wardly with respect to said neck when the hail is swung upwardly, said neck having a pair of notched guides for guiding said lugs; said covering having a down-turned flange, and a gasket carried by said fiange for contacting with the upper edge of the neck when the cover is in place.
