me STA HORACE w. CLARK, or Mailroom, ILLINOIS.
PRGTECTING BOX OR CASINGf W. DCDLARK,
a citizen-of the UnitedStates, residing at iMattoomin the count of Coles and State of l'lllinois, have invente ful Improvements in-Protecting' `Boxes or certain new and use- Gasings, of which the following is a true orcasings forvhousing water-meters, stopfcovcks, `valves and other water appliances and gas 'distributers and` appliances; also- `telephone and other electric conductors and. appliances4` and Aprotecting them from im- ;.prorper access or injury by 'contactwith other 'objects'and fromv crossing either'A below the Asurface of the ground or in open or exposed places. l. Thewinvention relates particularly to an improvement `in the lid `applied to the neck y of the box cover or top proper and the means for fastening the same and reference 1s here ,p improvement upon the'device described in the said Letters Patent.
i `,\'crtical'section oi'vmy improved meter box' made to United States Letters 'Patent Numi ber 794,661 issued 'to meunder date of July 1lth, 1905; v'the invention herein, being an f 'M y construction is herein described, reference being had to the accompanying drawthe. drawings, Figure 1 represents a .set below-*the ground and inclosing a water,
quieter of .anyV type. Fi g. 2 is an enlarged view of the lid of my box as shown in section at Fig. 1. Fig. k3 is a detailed section ltaken on the line of Fig'. 2. Fig. 4 is a View' of the lid of my box and-:Fig 5 is the key lmy meter box constructed oi' metal,
used by me for the operation of the device.
More particularly described, A represents rick or jpther desirable material, tted with 'a bottomB of any desirable type or materialand with a cover or top C, which top C is' designed to fit upon a body or box A and hasI an upwardly projecting neck c upon which my lid D is in inded to be secured. It is designed that the box A together with the bottom 'B and all of the cover C except the upper part of the neck o shall lie beneath the surface of the pavement P.
X' represents a water meter or other mechanical device for registering or measuring which it is desired-to inclose within my box` The neck o of the cover is fitted at one Specification of Letters'latent. Patented Apr; 18, 1911,

ally beveled on its under surface as shown at Eig-3. Opposed to the lug c and also von the inner surface of the cover neck o is fitted a lug c2 provided on its under surface with a bevel running `upwardly from the wall of the neck to the outer edge of the lug as shown at Fig. 2. The lid D is provided on beveled in conformity with the position' and shape of the lug 'c2 and is designed to engage therewith.V 'Opposed to the lug cl, and upon the under outer edge of the lid D, l provide a bevel d', which enables the lid D to be .placedobliquely against the lug 02. Adja- V cent to the lug c the lid is counter-sunk and perforated to receive a locking bolt E fitted with a squared or many sided head e and at y its lower end with a righteangled flange or prong e', which prong is designed to engage with the under beveled face of the lug c in locking engagement. In order. to provide for the insertion of the bolt E into the perforation of the lid D,"the said perforation to allow for the passagey of the right-angled prong e', must be'larger in diameter than the diameter of the bolt body. In order to prevent the loose engagement of the bolt'with -the lid, 'l provide immediately below the head e of the bolt a collar e2 which fills the perforation in the lid and fonthe purpose to be explained. I form @gis collar as an .eccen tric in its relation to thl bolt. This eccentric e2 is formed to lie opp )site upon the bolt) the prong e. On the vuinoler side "of 'theQlid and opposed to the 'lug:c, I lrovide a lugjd laterallyv beveled on'its un er face in ike manner. as lug c and is designed to engage the bolt E when in an unlocked position.
Fig. 4 shows my lid l) fitted with a recess` F in its edge near the bolt E intended to box cover, the lid is applied obliquely to the side opposite the locking bolt. The 'lugs 0? and al are made-toA engage with` each other" and the bevel d allows the lid- D to be ap# d and the beveled face of the lugr c," drawing' thelid down tightly at the locking point,
i .when the prong e' is forced across the bevel. lside on its inner surfacewith-a lug c lateri ln order to remove the lida the bolt is unf its-under surface with a lug d placed and receive one of the leveren'dsg g' ofthe key G." In operation, to place the lid'upon' vthe.
locked Aby the use of the key C, the prong e forced into tight engagement with the bev- I L eled face of the lug da, and the lever g is then thrust into the recess F and by leverage,
the lid is loosened so the operator can easily4 remove the lid, l
It will be understood that I intend my invention to be -used not only for water meter boxes, but as a cover for any underground receptacle where the same may be practically use What I claim as my invention is y l. A cover for a protecting casing, having .a lug fitted to the innerA face of the protecting casing, a lid, a locking bolt fitted within a suitable; perforation in the lid ofthe same, saidjbolt adapted to engage in locking i contact with the lug, and vfitted on its body with'anv eccentric adapted to lie Within the perforation of' the said lid.
