Description
HENRY'wfS-HPARD.
Lock for Can; Covers.
qNo, 125,623, Y Patented April9,172.
D a l my 1' i -O o HENRY W. SHEPARD,
PATENT OEErcE.
0E NEw YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS FQRCAN-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,623, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY W. SHEPAED, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Metallic Can- Govers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view, part lof the cover being broken away. Fig. 2 is a bottom-plan view. Fig. 3 is a side view ofthe lug and the inclined shoulders.
My present improvement in locking devices for securing the covers of milk-cans and other sheet-metal vessels, in connection with which a removable cover or top is used, consists in securing ou the neck of the can or body of the vessel a stationary lock, arranged in such relative position to inclined bearing-shoulders, which are also attached to the neck of the can or body of the vessel, that, when the bolt of the lock is thrown out, it shall be on aline parallel with the vertical head or flange, in which the shoulders terminate.
The great advantage of this arrangement is found in its simplicity and the entire effectiveness ofthe fastening it affords; and in the fact that the lock, being permanently attached to the neck, it is always in position to be used, as all possibility of its being mislaid or lost, as is frequently the case with all other lookin g devices of this character, is securely guarded against.
The construction and operation of my invention are as follows:
A is the neckof the can or body of a vessel, and B the cover, which may each be constructed of any suitable material and of any desired form. C C are two inclined or tapering shoulders, and may be cast or otherwise formed with an annular rim or hoop, C or they may be independent pieces. In either case they are to be permanently attached to the neck at points diametrically opposite. D D are two lugs, and are permanently riveted to or otherwise secured on the inner surface of the dome or top plate of the cover. These lugs Aare also arranged diametrically opposite, so that when the top is placed in position and so turned as to cause the lugs 'to overlap the shoulders, with their hooked heads d d impingin g against the inclined surfaces of the same, they shall, as they travel, at all times pass over corresponding sections of the inclined shoulders until each reaches the projecting heads or flanges c c, in which the shoulders terminate, and which arrest all further movement of the lugs in that direction. E is an ordinary lock, and is permanently secured to the exterior surface of neck, and at such relative position to one of the shoulders G that, when its bolt c is thrown out, it shall protrude on a line directly parallel with the head c of the shoulder, only leaving a space between the head or flange c and the bolt c, for the reception and retention of the lug D, as clearly shown in Fig. l.
From the foregoing detailed description the operation of my improved fastening will be readily understood.
The cover is placed 1n position, and turned until the lugs D` D overlap the shoulders C G and until their hooked ends d d butt against the heads c c of the shoulders. This movement so forces down the cover as to secure a close joint or connection with the neck or cylinder. The key is then applied and the device locked, and which forces the bolt out on the side ofthe lug, securely fastening the same between the head c of the shoulder and the bolt c.
Instead of a single lock two may be used, so arranged as to fasten the opposite lugs.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pate-nt of the United States, is
The inclined shoulders C C, lugs D D, and stationary lock E, when the same are so combined and arranged as to operate substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof I have signed my name GEO. B. PATTERSON, JOHN B. Bamm.
