SAFETY-LOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 15, 1910.
Application filed June 24, 1909. Serial No. 504,116.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, NIKOLAUS REINEHR, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 10 l- Hauptstrasse, Schoneberg, near Berlin, Germany, locksmith, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a safetylock, in which for the special purpose of an increased protection a composite key is employed.
The novel feature of this new improve ment consists in view of the safety-lock systems hitherto commonly in use in giving the opportunity to easily lock the door from the inside and to exchange a part of the key so as to vary the latter in its length, if any possibility exists that unauthorized persons have copied the very accurate shape of the double key.
The annexed drawing shows by way of example the new safety-lock in which:
Figure l is a plan-view of the safety-lock partially in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a vertical-section through the same.
The safety lock consists of the usual lock having the locking bolt 72, which is adapted to be projected into a corresponding recess of the door frame. Hinged to the inside of the door as at Z is a case or box 7a which contains the safety device that consists of a swinging lever c fulcrumed in said case and actuated by a spring 6. Pivoted to the free end of the lever 0 1s a pin or bar d which projects outward from the case and is adapted to engage the locking bolt 7L so as to secure the latter in locked position. A fastening pin f is provided for maintaining the case is in raised position (Fig. 2). Projecting from the swinging lever in line with the keyhole is an adjustable pin 2'.
The composite key consists of the key proper g which is adapted to operate the locking bar it and an extension at that is removably secured in the key g and that when passed through the keyhole is adapted to act against the adjustable pin 2' so as to swing the'lever c inward withdrawing the bar or pin (Z from engagement with the bolt 72.. The spring 6 of the locking lever acts so as to bring the lever 0 back into its normal position, whereupon the locking-pin cl is brought before the bolt it, so that the latter cannot be moved.
In case the door is to be locked from the inside, the supplementary locking-box 73, containing the securityelements, can be dropped down by loosening the fasteningpin f with the door and turning the box around the hinge Z, so as to assume the position shown in Fig. 2. In the position shown the main key 9 may be introduced into the lock from the inside and the door locked. If there is any'suspicion, that the composite key has been copied by unauthorized persons, especially if the exact length of the extension is known, it is easily possible to substitute said extension by another one and to adjust the pin 71 accordingly, which is screwed into the locking lever c.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, I declare that what I claim is:
In a safety lock of the character described, the combination with the locking bolt, of a case tiltably secured at the rear of the lock casing, a swinging lever fulcrumed therein, a pin carried by the said lever and adapted to engage the said locking bolt, a key for operating the latter, an extension removably secured in said key and adapted when passed through the keyhole to operate the swinging lever and means for securing the said case in working position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
NIKOLAUS REINEHR.
