S1?lriClliICAT'INl forming part oi: Letters Patent No. 687,703, dated November 26, 1901. Application nea December 5,1900. seriinasavvs. (remodel.)
To all whom, if; may concern:
Be it known that l, JACOB C. SWOPE, a citizen of the United States ot' America, residing at Pittsburgyin the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a speciication, ret'- erence beinghad therein to the accompanying drawings. i
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in locks, and relates more particularly to door-locks and the like.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the locks may x5 be easily applied to doors in va most novel and convenient manner; furthermore, to con- `struct a lock in such a manner that it may be seated in an annular opening or recess provided in the door for that purpose.
The invention has for its object the construction of a device of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in construction and strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be herein-v` Figure lis a vertical sectional View of a por tion of a door and locks with my improvements secured therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec tional view of the spring-catch. Fig. 3 is a 4o like view of the lock proper.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 indicates the door; 2, the plate secured to the front edge of the door, having openings 3 and t formed therein.
The reference-numeral 5 represents an annular opening or recess formed in the door, having secured therein a cylindrical casing 6, said casing having formed therein a partition 7, provided with an opening 8.
The reference-numeral 9 indicates a cap secured to the end of the casin g, said cap carrying an inwardly-extending flange 10, which" is adapted to fit neatly in the interior wallsl of the cylindrical casing. The said cap forms shoulders 11, resting upon the end of the cylindrical casing. A latch-bolt 12 is arranged in the opening 3 of the plate 2 and extends rearwardly through the opening 8 of the partition 7, said bolt carrying at its rearward end bifurcated lugs 13, in which is pivotally secured at 14 an arm 15, pivotally connected to ,the T-sliaped-head 16, said head having a bifurcated end 17, in which is pivotaally secured the end of the pivoted arm 15. The said head 16 is further connected to the sleeve 18, and said sleeve is carried by the knobspindle 19, which is rotatably mounted in the sides of the cylindrical casing. The knobspindle 19 furthermore extends through the sides of the door and carries a collar 2O and knob 21. Coil-springs 22 are secured to the upper and lower ends of the T-shaped head and are connected to the cap 9, these springs serving to normally retain the latch in the closed position.
The reference-numeral 23 indicates a cylindrical opening formed in the door below the cylindrical openings 3 4, and 24 represents a cylindrical casing arranged in the said opening, said cylindrical casing having arranged therein a partition 25. l
The reference-numeral 28 represents a cap which is arranged in the rear and is adapted to close the cylindrical casing. The partitionV 25 and edge'plate 2 are provided with openings 29 for the reception of the lock-bolt 30, carrying a bifurcated end 31, in which is pivotally secured a spring-pressed lever 32, the latter resting upon a bearing 33, which is rigidly secured in the casing, said lever carrying lugs 34 and engaging retractile springs 35, the latter being secured in the bearing 33. A lug 36 is formed on the under side of the spring-pressed lever, said lever normally resting upon the pin 37, extending transversely in the cylindrical casing and rigidly secured thereto.
The reference-numeral 3S indicates an aperture for the reception of the key. (Not shown.) roo The operation of my improved lock is as follows: The key is inserted through the open ing 38, engaging the lug 36, which tends to force the spring-pressed lever rearwardly and upwardly, the under portion of the lever riding upon the pin 37 and bearing 33, thus withdrawing the lock-bolt 30 from engagement with the recess formed in the doorjamb and unlocking the door. The operation of locking the door will be in the reverse direc= tion, as will be readily understood, the retractile springs 35 tending to normally press the spring-pressed lever downwardly and further retaining all the parts in proper position.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved lock will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-A In a door-lock, a cylindrical casing, a par'- tition having an aperture formed therein, located in the forward end thereof, a cap secured to one end of said casing, a lock-bolt operating in the said aperture in the partition, a bifurcated lug made integral with said lock-bolt, a lever pivotally secured in said bifurcation, a bearing comprising two upright standards secured to the casing, a rod connecting the two standards, said rod acting as the bearing for the lever, lugs secured to each side of said lever, retractile springs secured to said rod and engaging said lugs, a depending lug made integral with said lever,- and a pin secured in the said casing transverse thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in thepresence of two witnesses.
