GEORGE W. MOULDIN, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
VAULT-DOOR LOCK.
Application filed September 24, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MOULDIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vault-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in vault door locks and is designed for the purpose of providing a concealed locking device for such doors which may be used either as an auxiliary to the usual comstructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 illustrates a vault door with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing the housing for the operating parts of my invention. Fig. 3 shows the bolt in section and its keeper. Fig. 1 is a view of the bolt keeper as seen from the right in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view of the housing showing the locking bolt and operating parts. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the transmission link or lever lo cated between the key rod and the locking bolt. 1
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I have illustrated itsapplication to a vault door A and its wall B, it being understood that the locking apparatus is located in the wall B and the bolt is adapted to lock the door A with relation to the wall B.
The entire locking apparatus is located in or incased within the wall B and the metallic box or housing 1 is thus cemented or fixed within the wall. This lock box or housing is provided with a lid or cover 2 that Specification of Letters Patent.

is secured to the box by screws 3 to incloSe the working parts of the device.
The lock box is formed with integral internally threaded bosses 2 2 2 and 2 projecting from its side to accommodate the tubular housings l and 5, the former adapted to thread into bosses 2 and 2 and the latter to thread into either 2 or 2.
The tube 4 is utilized as a casing for the lock or vault bolt 6, which is preferably circular in cross section and of proper length and size for the purpose. One end of the bolt is bifurcated and perforated for the pivot bolt or rivet 7 which connects the lock bolt with'the pivoted transmission lever 8 through the slot 8 therein. The transmission leveris formed with an integral sector arm 9 and 1s pivoted on a bolt 10 which is seated in recessed bosses 11 and 11 alined and integral with the box 1 and its lid 2 respec tively. The perimeter of the sector arm 9 is formed with teeth 12 which are in mesh with the worm screw 13 on the key rod 14. This rod is supported in the tubing 5 and a threaded cap 15 fitted in the boss 2 and it will be evident that when the key rod is turned, as by a tool applied to the end 16 of the rod the sector 9 is turned swinging the transmission lever 8 upon its pivot 10, and the lever in turn moves the locking bolt to locked position.
The locking device is arranged for either a right hand or a left hand manipulation and adaptation to a door so that the key rod may be displaced and reversed, the cap 15 being threaded into the boss 2 and the casing 5 then threaded into the boss 2 and in either event the casing 5 is closed by a suitable plug 5. When the apparatus is reversed, the bolt 6 is attached to the lever 8 through the slot 8, the plug or cap 1 is removed from the boss 2 and the casing 4 is threaded into the boss 2* to accommodate the bolt 6. The locking apparatus thus in closed in its housing and casings is embedded in the wall of the vault or safe, with the key rod casing 5 flush with the surface of the Wall, and the coupling end of the key rod as 16 situated a suitable distance within the casing 5. The casing 4: projects to the edge of the vault wall and is open so that the bolt may be projected therefrom when the door is to be locked.
The bolt keeper with which the bolt 6 c0- acts is ahook or head l7integral with the rackplate 18. This plate is provided with teeth 19, and a slot 20 through which the bolt 21 extends.
I plate 23 is fastened to the wall A by means of screws 23' to form a secure bearing for the threaded stud, and a clamp or look nut 24 is employed to prevent the stud turning. Through the medium of the slotted and toothed connection between the rack plate and toothed stud it will be seen that the bolt keeper'or head 17 maybe adjusted asto dis tance from the door A to accommodate the bolt 6. When the key rod is turned it is evident that the bolt 6 is projected into its keeper 17, and the door is thus prevented from being opened and the contents of the vault are safe even though the usual combination lock may be broken.
From the above description taken in connection with my drawings it is evident that I have provided a vault lock which is strong,
Oopiesof this patent may be obtained for g This bolt by means of the lock nut 21 secures the rack plate in ad- 1. The combination with a vault wall and itsdoor, of a housing embedded in the wall, a transmission lever pivoted in the housing and formed with a toothed sector arm, a key rod having a worm thread engaging said toothed arm, a bolt pivoted to the transmission lever, and a keeper for the bolt secured to the door. v
--2. The combination with a vault wall and its door, of a housing embedded in the wall, a transmission lever pivoted in the housing and formed with a toothed sector arm, a tubular casing attached to the housing having an end accessible from the surface of the wall and a key rod revoluble in the casing, a worm thread on the key rod engaging the toothed sector, a locking bolt pivoted on the transmission lever and a casing attached to the housing inclosing said bolt, and a keeper for thebolt'attached to the door.
.- In testimony whereof I 'affix my signature.
