GEORGE MOULDIN, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
LOCK-STRIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MOULDIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Soldiers Home, Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Strikes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved lock strike, or keeper for sliding bolts and is designed especially for use 1n connection with a sliding bolt forming part of a vault door lock invented by me and described and claimed in my allowed application for Patent Ser. No. 52,361 filed Sept. 24., 1915.
The primary object of the invention isthe provision of an adjustable lock strike or keeper for a bolt, the bolt being operated from a locking device embedded in a wall, and the keeper or lock strike being secured to the inner side of the door to be locked, which as illustrated herein, is a vault door.
The invention consists essentially in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts in the construction of the keeper or lock strike as will, be pointed out and claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings: Figure 1 illustrates a vault door locked with the lock of my invention in connection with the improved lock strike. Fig. 2 is a plan view, enlarged of the lock, showing the mechanism in dotted lines, and the keeper in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the keeper, showing a portion of the door in section together with the sliding bolt in section. Fig. 4 is another elevation view of the keeper showing the bolt.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention I have illustrated it in connection with a vault door lock, the vault door being indicated by the letter A, and the wall in which the vault is located being indicated by the letter B.
I have shown the locking apparatus completekbut in dotted lines for convenience of illustration and this apparatus is inclosed within a metallic box or casing 1 provided with a cover 2 secured thereto by the screws 3. The lock box is embedded in or cemented within the wall of the vault, and is formed with integral internally threaded bosses 2" 2 2 and 2 projecting from its side Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 18, 1916'.
Application filed December'20, 1915. Serial No. 67,825.
to accommodate the tubular housings A and 5, the former adapted to thread into the bosses 2 and 2 and the latter to thread into the bosses 2 and 2 The tube 4 is utilized as a casing for the sliding bolt 6 and one end of this bolt is bifurcated for the rivet or pivot bolt 7 which connects the lock bolt with the pivoted transmission lever 8 through the slot 8 therein. This lever is formed with an integral sector arm 9 and is pivoted on a bolt 10, the periphery 11 of the sector being formed with teeth 12 which are in mesh with a worm screw 13 on the key, rod 14:. This rod is supported in the tubing 5 and a threaded cap 15 fitted in the boss 2 The locking apparatus thus described is inclosed in its casing 1 and the casing is embedded in the wall of the vault as before stated, with the key rod casing 5, at its end flush with the surface of the wall, and the coupling end of the key rod as 16 situated a suitable distance within the casing. The casing 4 projects to the edge of the vault wall adjacent the vault door, and the end of the casing is open so that the end of the sliding bolt may be projected therethrough.
The improved bolt keeper or look strike with which the bolt 6 co-acts is a bent head or hook 17 integral with the metallic rack plate 18 and bent over from a fiat bar shape. This is provided on one face with corrugations or teeth 19 and a slot 20 is provided in the plate, through which a bolt 21 extends. This bolt, by means of the lock nut 21 secures the rack plate in adjusted position to a toothed bar or stud 22 and this stud is threaded at 22 to screw into the door A at its inner side.
The wall A is preferably provided with a reinforcing plate 23 fastened to the wall or door A by means of the screws 23 for the purpose of forming a secure bearing for the threaded stud, and a clamp nut or lock nut 24 is utilized to prevent turning of the stud.
Through the medium of the slotted and toothed connections between the rack plate and the toothed stud, it will be seen that the keeper or lock strike 17 may be adjusted as to distance from the door A to accommodate the bolt 6. When the key rod is turned by application ofa suitable tool at the end 16, it is evident that the sliding bolt 6 is projected into its keeper a bolt passed through said slotted plate 17 and the door is thus prevented from beand perforated stud and a Clamp nut on ing opened. the bolt for retaining the plate and stud What I claim is o in adjusted position. I I I A lock strike comprising in combination In testimony whereof I aflix my signaa slotted rack plate formed with a bent ture. end, a threaded stud perforated and pro- I vided'with teeth to engage the rack plate,
