EDVARD Y. MOORE, OF MILIVAUKEE, \VISOONSIN.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,780, dated December 80, 1890.
' Application filed August 27, 1890. Serial No. 363,170. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD Y. MOORE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates more particularly to locks for elevator-doors; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a portion of an elevator-door provided with my improved lock, one section of the casing being detached; Fig. 2, a detail sectional view of a portion of said casing; and Figs. 3 to 5, inclusive, are detail views illustrating certain forms of adjustment for the latch that forms part of said lock.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A 13 represent the sections that form the casing of my improved lock, the section B being provided upon its interior wit-h tapped lugs 11 for engagement with screws 0, by which the section A is held in place.
In fitting a lock to an elevator-door it is usual to cut away a portion of the wire mesh that forms part of the door and clamp the loose ends of the wires between the meeting edges of the sections of the lock-casing,grooves (Z being filed in these edges to fit the wires.
In order to conceal the meeting edges of the casing-sections, and thereby improve the appearance of the look, I provide said sections with flanges c, that have the same contour as the lock-casing and are arranged adjacent to said meeting edges, as best illus trated in Fig. 2.
The usual spring-controlled hand-grip O is pivoted within the section B of the lock-casing, and the latter is provided with a hole f for the insertion of akey to throw back the handgrip from the outside. lhe latch D of the lock has its shank g connected to the pivoted spring-controlled hand-grip O, and said latch extends through the outer stile E of the door to engage a socket F on a jamb of the doorcasing, the front plate on section A of the lock-casing being secured to said stile by screws h or other suitable means.
Owing to the fact that there is no standard thickness for the outer stile E of an elevator-door, it frequently happens that the latch D will not always extend far enough beyond from the door to catch against the nose-piece i of the socket F, or, on the other hand, said latch may extend too far into said socket to come flush with said nose-piece. To overcome the disadvantages just set forth I make the latch longitudinally adjustable, and thereby accommodate the lock to any elevator-door regardless of the thickness of the stile immediately adjacent to said lock. In Fig. l I show the shank g of the latch as provided with screw-threads and engaging a tapped opening in the hand-grip O, this opening being illustrated by dotted lines. In Fig. 3 the screw-threaded shank of the latch passes through a plain opening in the hand-grip, an d nuts j on said shank are run up against opposite sides of said hand-grip to maintain the adjustment of said latch. In Figs. 4 and 5 I show a non-threaded latch-shank, and a setscrew impinged against said shank to hold the latch in its adjusted position. Any one of the several forms of adjustment shown and described herein may be employed; but as the same result may be obtained by other means, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any particular means for adj usting the door-latch in alongitudinal direction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An elevator-lock comprising a casing, a hand-grip pivoted within the casing, and a latch having its shank longitudinally adj ustable in the hand-grip, substantially as setforth.
2. An elevator-lock having the casin g thereof in sections united by suitable means, and each section provided with an outer flange adjacent to its inner edge, this flange being extended from end to end thereof in rear of the front plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDlVARD Y. MOORE.
