DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,806, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed May 10, 1881. (No'modeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN J. TIERNEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the part of the fastening attached to the door-post and a part of the guard. Fig. 3 is a front eleration of the part of the fastening attached to the door, the door being shown closed; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of part of the fastening attached to the door, the door. being shown open.

The object of this invention is to promote security in door-fastenings secured from the inner side of doors.
A represents a door post or casing, and B is a door.
To the door-post-A, a little below the boltsocket B, is attached a long socket-nut, (J, the outer end of whichis rounded and tapered, as shown in Figs. and 2, and is secured to the post A by a long bolt or rivet, D, the head of which is countersunk into the said nut, so as to leave the outer surface smooth.
Upon the forward end of the nut O is formed a right-angled plate. E, which fits into the rabbet in the door-post A, into which the door B shuts, and is secured to the said door-post A by screws, so that should a burglar succeed in removing the bolt or rivet l) the nut G will still be held securely in place.
F is a screw which passes through the door B and screws into the nut O. The inner end or head of the screwF is squared to receive a key, by means of which it is screwed into and out of the nut G. The head of the screw F is countersunk into a plate, Gr, attached to the inner side of the door B, as shown in Fig. 1, to avoid the necessity of countersinking the door B, and thus weakening the fastening.
To guard against the possibility of getting access to the screwFby cutting a hole through a panel of the door, the head of the said screw is covered with a guard, H, which is bent at right angles, so that its outer part will fit upon the plate G and cover the end or head of the screw F, and its inner part will enter the space between the edge of the door B and the door-post A.
The guard H is secured in place by screws I, passing through slots Jin the outer part of the said guard and screwing into the plate Gr, so that the said guard can be raised to uncover the head of the screw F and can be lowered to cover the said screw.
Any desired ornamental configuration can be given to the outer part of the guard H, and the said outer part of the guard is provided with a thumb-piece, K, for convenience in raisin g the said guard.
The inner part of the guard H is extended upward so far that its upper end will rest against the lower side of the bolt L of an ordinarylock applied to the door B when the said guard H is lowered to cover the screw F, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that the said bolt will prevent the guard from being raised.
When the guard H is to be raised the bolt of the ordinary lock has to be thrown back or unlocked, so that the upper end of the said guard H can slide past the end of the said bolt, as shown in Fig. 4.
When the guard H is not used the end of the screw F can have a knob permanently attached to it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A door-fastening constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a post, nut, door-screw, and movable guard H, all operated as set forth.
2. The combination, with screw F for securing a door, of the post-socket (3, having on its forward end the right-angled plate E, fitting into a rabbet of door-post and secured by screws, as described, whereby a burglar can not remove the socket, even after he has withdrawn the bolt.
3. The guard H, bent at right angles, having its inner part between the door and post, and provided with an upper end resting against the bolt L, as and for the purpose specified.
