CLAUDE ELLIS, OF SPRINGVILLE, NEW YORK.
EXTENSIONWI1\TDOW-SCREEN LOCKER.
Application fi1ed September 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE ELLIS, of Springville, Erie county, New York, United States of America, have invented a new and useful device for the purpose of locking the ordinary extension window-screen of commerce, consisting of two sliding connected sections, so that the screen cannot be shut together and removed from the window without raising the window and at the same time the device does not interfere with shutting the screen together when the locking device is not in operation. It cannot be interfered with from the outside of the window nor from the inside of the window without raising the window.
I accomplish the purpose outlined above by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of an extension window screen composed of two sliding connected screen sections equipped with a screen look constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the same in operation. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 shows the locking device detached from the screen.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 represents the section of an ordinary extension window screen which is to be used farthest out of doors and 2 represents the section of the screen which is to be used nearest indoors.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 3 represents the locking device. The device consists of a blade 4, thin enough to fit between the frames of the two screen sections of a window screen. 1
Referring to'Fig. 3, 5 represents a hole in one end of the blade. This hole, together with a screw represented by 7 Fig. 2, constitutes means for pivotally fastening blade ito the frame of the screen section to be used farthest out of doors, which screen section is represented by 1 in Figs. 1' and 2. The method of fastening the device to the frame of the screen section is illustrated in Fig. 2. Referring to Fig. 3, 6 represents a block fastened to the end of the blade opposite the hole 5. The blade 4 may be of any suitable metal.
The device may be constructed of wood and metal or entirely of metal. The inventor does not confine himself to any particular shape, type or design of block, although, of

course, the block must be of dimensions sufiiciently great to block the end of the frame of the screen section to be used nearest indoors. The block need not be a solid, as shown in Fig. 8, but the blocking means may consist of the blade 1- bent or so constructed as to serve the same purpose as a solid. The device should be fastened to the frame of the screen section to be used farthest out of doors (1 in Figs. 1 and 2), at a point so that when the screen is placed in a window space with its ends extending into the sash guideways of the window casing, the blocking means mounted upon the blade, when the blade is in locking position as shown in Figs. 1 and '2, will block the end of the frame of the screen section to be used near est indoors, thereby preventing the closing of the screen. 7
It is preferable to fasten the device so that when it is in operation the top edge of the blade will be flush with the tops of the two frames of the screen sections. It will be impossible to interfere with this lock either from the inside or the outside, as long as the window is down. Upon raising the window the blade may be swung up out of range of the end of the screen frame to be used nearest indoors, in the position represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, thereby allowing the two screen sections to be shoved together. The device can be used in connection with any extension window screen consisting of two sliding sections and of ordinary construction. It is designed to be utilized in connection with any device for locking a window sash.
I claim as my invention;
The combination, in a lock for an extension window screen consisting of two sliding connected sections, of a blade adapted to fit between the frames of the two sliding sections of the window screen, with means for pivotally fastening one end of the blade to the indoor side of the frame of the screen section. to be used farthest out of doors, so that the blade may swing in a vertical plane, and blocking means mounted on the other end of the blade adapted when in looking position to block the end of the frame of the screen section to be used nearest indoors.
