To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Longview, in the county of Gregg and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in plows.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of plows, more especially that shown and described in an application, filed by me Sept. 21, 1909, Serial No. 518,881, and to provide elflcient means for wedging the share on the standard and interlocking it with the same, and to arrange the parts so that the strain incident to plowing will tend to maintain the share in its interlocking relation with the standard, whereby the fastening bolt for securing the share on the standard will be relieved of excessive strain and the share maintained firmly in place, even should the fastening bolt become loose.
Vith these and other objects in View', the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of a plow standard, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig.l 2 is a perspective view of the co-acting plow point or share in reverse position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a plan view.
Like numerals of reference designate co-rresponding parts in all the lgures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, 10 designates the lower portion of the standard of a well known form of turning plow, and 11 designates the plow point or share. The form of these parts may be changed or modified as desired. The standard in theform shown is provided with the usual upright landside face 12, and the upper curved face 13. In the aforesaid application, the plow share or point is interlocked with the standard by means of separate tapering lugs, located on the landside face and on the upper curved face, respectively, and arranged in spaced relation. In the present application these lugs are merged into a single tapering projection 14, composed of an inwardly extending transversely inclined top portion 15, and an approximately vertical depending portion 16, and it extends partly over the curved upper face 13 of the standard and partly over the upright landside face 12. Its front end is spaced from the front end of the standard, and its inwardly extending top portion and approximately vert-ical side portion are of an area less than the area of the top face 13 and the upright landside face 12 of the standard. The projection 14 is tapered both in thickness and in width or breadth, and it has its thicker and narrower end at the front, and it decreases in thickness and-increases in width or breadth toward its rear end, and it merges into the top face 13 of the standard and in the upright landside face 12, adjacent to the landside shoulder 17. The inwardly extending top portion 15 has a slight rearward inclination, and it has an inner inclined sideedge 18. The lower portion 19 of the sideface of the depending side portion`1-6 Vof the projection is approximatelyV vertical, and thel upper portion 20 of the said face is inclined and extends to the outer edge of the top face of the upper portion 15 of the projection. The lower side edge 21 of the tapering projection is inclined and extends upwardly and outwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The top face of the tapering lug is arranged at an angle to the curved top face of the standard, and the lower and upper portions 19 and 2O of the side face of the projection are set at an angle to the landside face, and these faces of the proj ection gradually approach the planes of the faces of the standarduntil they merge into the same.
The plow point or share 11 comprises the usual working plate 22, having at one edge thedepending approximately vertical landside plate or flange 23. The lower .end of the standard fits snugly inthe angle formed by the working plate or body of the share and the landside plate or flange of the plow point or share, the rear end of the landside flange abutting against the shoulder 17 and the inner face of the said landside flange being arranged flat against the landside face of the standard. The plow point or share is provided at the angle formed by the landside flange and the working plate with a tapering recess or socket 24, composed of angularly related portions 25 and 26, formed in the lower face of the working plate 22 and in the inner face of the landside flange 26 and corresponding in shape to the tapering projection 14:. The plow point or share is applied to the standard in the usual manner, and t-he t-apering` projection lits into the tapering recess or socket 26, and interlocks the plow point or share with the standard forming a dove-tail lock, and wedging the plow share or point on the standard. The plow share or point is secured upon the curved face 13 of the standard by means of a bolt 27, passing through registering perforations 28 and 29 of the plow point and the standard. The distance across the space between the side edges 18 and 21 of the tapered projection is greater than the distance across the space between the same at the bottom of the said flanges 19 and 21, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3 by the dotted lines a and b, so thatit is impossible to disengage the plow point from the standard by either an upward movement or a lateral movement, and the strain on the plow point incident to its use tends to hold the plow point on the standard and maintains the same firmly in its interlocked relation with the wedge-shaped projection. By this construction the bolt 27 is relieved of excessive strain, and the plow point will remain firmly in its position on the standard, even should the fastening bolt become loose. In placing the plow point on the standard the tapering lug in engaging the tapering recess or socket 26 will force the plow point in correct position against the mold board and the landside flange against the landside'shoulder 17, andthe interlocking of the part-s will hold the plow point in position while the latter is being bolted to the standard.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a plow, a standard provided at the meeting edge of its landside face and its top face with a tapering projection extending over a portionv of the said top face and over a portion of the landside face and being of an arealess than the said faces, and a share having its landside flange fitted against the landside face of the standard and provided at its angle with a recess receiving the said projection, whereby the share is held against vertical movement on the landside face and lateral movement on the topl face of the standard.
2. In a plow, a standard provided at the meeting edges of its top face and landside face with a tapering projection extending over a portion of the top face and a portion of the landside face of the standard and being of less area than the said faces and having its thicker and narrower end at the front and decreasing in thickness and increasing in vwidth toward its rear end and merging into the top face and the landside face of the standard, and a share fitted against the top face and the landside face ofthe standard and provided in the angle formed by its landside flange with a socket of corresponding tapering shape receiving the lug of the standard and interlocking the share with the same, whereby the share is wedged on the standard and held against vertical movement on the landside face and lateral movement on the top face of the standard.
3. In a plow, a standard provided at the meeting. edges of its top face andlandside face with a tapering projection composed of an inwardly extending top portion and a depending approximately vertical portion, said projection being spaced from the front of the standard and decreasing in thickness and increasing in width toward its rear end and merging into the top and landside faces of the standard, and a share tted againstthe top -face and the landside face of the standard and provided in the angle formed by its landside flange with a socket of corresponding shape receiving the lug of the standard and interlocking the share with the same, whereby the share is wedged on the standard and is held against upward movement on the landside face and lateral movement on the top face of the standard.
4. In a plow, a standard provided at the meeting edges of its top and landside faces with a tapering projection composed of an inwardly extending transversely inclined top portion and a depending approximately vertical portion having the upper portion of its side face inclined upwardly and inwardly, and a share fitted against the top face and the landside face of the standard and provided in the angle formed by its landside flange with a socket of corresponding tapering shape receiving the lug and interlocking the share with the standard, `whereby the share is wedged thereon and is held against upward movement on the landside face and lateral movement on the top facel 129 of the standard.
5. In a plow, a standard provided at the meeting edges of its top and landside faces with a tapering projection composed ofan inwardly extending transversely inclinedl 125 top portion and a depending approximately. vertical portion having the upper portion of its side face inclined upwardly and inwardly, said projection being provided with inclined s'ide edgesV and being of av 13.9.
