Description

I. o. DARsT; REGEPTAGLE FOR CIGARETTE HOLDERS. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 16, 1909.
974,128 Patented N0v'.1,.-1 91 0.
W/ZNESSES:
1 @{gyMw Q UNITED STATES PATENT orrion,
JAMES C. DABST, O F ROANOKE, VIRGINIA.
RECEPTACLE FOR CIGARETTE-HOLDERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. DARST, a citizen of the United States, residing in Roanoke, county of Roanoke, and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Receptacles for Cigarette- Holders, of which the following is a description.
This invention has reference to receptacles for cigarette and cigar-holders and particularly to devices, for receiving cigarette and cigar-holders, having means for cleaning the same.
Among the objects of my invention may be noted the following: To provide a receptacle for articles of various kinds, but particularly cigar and cigarette-holders which receptacles may be used for transporting the said holders or other devices or may be used to carry in the pocket and protect the holder or device from lint, dust, etc; to provide a combined receptacle and cleaner for cigarette and cigar-holders which, when the holder is not in use, can be employed to clean the holder and after cleaning it preserve it from being soiled; to provide a device by means of which the cigarette and cigar-holder can be kept clean when not in use and which can be swept out as the cover of the receptacle is removed; and to provide a combined receptacle and cleaner for cigar and cigarette-holders which will be simple in construction, durable, cheap to manufacture, and easy to manipulate.
lVith the above objects in view my invention consists in the parts, features, elements and combinations of elements as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood I have provided drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing my invention, with parts broken away to illustrate certain features of construction; and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the cleaner and the cover of the receptacle, the latter being in section.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a receptacle which may be made of any suitable material but preferably of a non-corrosive and non-tarnishing metal such for example as aluminum, this metal being preferred also because of light weight and attractive appearance. In form this receptacle is preferably cylindrical or in the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 15, 1909.

form of a tube with its bottom 2 rounded. The cap or cover 3 is rounded at its outer end and provided with a frictional portion a for entering the mouth of the receptacle and closing the same. A circumferential flange 5 acts as a stop to prevent the cover from being pushed too far into the receptacle. The portion a, which enters the receptacle, is made sufiiciently extensive to engage the outer end 6 of the contained holder, or any other device which may be placed therein.
The interior of the cap 3 is made hollow or recessed as at 7 and centrally thereof is provided with a teat S in the socket of which is set the end of a long wire 9 which, in this instance of my invention, constitutes both a holder for a brush 10 and a cleaner for the mouth-piece or stem 11 of the cigar or cigarette-holder, said wire 9 being sufiiciently long, as shown in Fig. l, to extend clear to the-outer end of said mouthpiece l1.
Adjacent the cap or cover 3 the wire 9 is provided with the bristles, as stated, forming a brush which is sufliciently long to extend the full length of the body portion 12 of the holder and also sufficiently great in diameter to completely fill the said body portion. The bristles are secured to the wire 9 by any convenient and effective means, but in this instance by twisting a piece of wire as shown at 13, upon the wire 9 and thus enwrapping the bristles so as to hold them in such position as to project from the wire 9 as an axis. The twisted wire 13 also helps to strengthen or stiffen the wire 9 and affords a more substantial structure and enables a better connection to be made in the socket of the teat of the cover 3, which connection may be made in any usual manner as soldering, etc.
The particular form of holder shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings is for a cigarette made by enwrapping the cigarette paper about the longitudinal bars 14: thereof and by filling the wrapper thus made with to baeco, thus enabling a smoke to be had without burning the paper. This is a common form of cigarette-holder and is herein illustrated for example merely without any intention of limiting my invention in any manner to use in connection therewith.
It will be understood that my combined Patented W1, 1910.
receptacle and cleaner can be used in contions in the form of the brush, the cleaning stem 9 and the shape and form of the receptacle and its cap can be made Without departing from the spirit and broad idea. of my invention. It will also be clear that when a holder or other device is placed in the receptacle and the cover set thereon the brush will enter the said receptacle or device and the stem will run clear to the end, thus pushing from said stem any objectionable substances therein; and when the cleaner is removed by removing the cap 3 the entire device contained in the receptacle will be brushed and cleaned out. Of course, after the holder or other device is removed from the receptacle it can be like wise cleaned so as to replace it in good condition, and when the parts are all together, as shown in Fig. 1, the receptacle becomes a holder and storage device for the several parts.
Having thus described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A receptacle having a form and size adapting it for containing a holder for cigars or cigarettes, said receptacle having one end permanently closed and its mouth closed by a removable cover provided with a cleaning-device, the latter consisting of a core secured to the interior of the cover and extending into the receptacle and having a plurality of radially extending bristles arranged along its length.
2. A receptacle having a form and size adapting it for containing a holder for cigars or cigarettes, said receptacle having a closed bottom and removable cover, the latter having a cylindrical brush extending therefrom and adapted to enter the receptacle or a holder therein.
3. A receptacle having a form and size adapting it for containing a holder for cigars or cigarettes, said receptacle having a closed bottom and removable cover, the latter having a brush extending therefrom and adapted to enter the receptacle or a holder therein, and the core of Which brush is extended beyond the brush proper, so as to enter the stem of the holder when the receptacle is closed.
4. A receptacle for the purposes described, composed of a cylindrical body of substantially uniform diameter from end to end, said body having a cover provided with a frictional portion for entering the mouth of the body, and said cover having a cylindrical brush extending centrally therefrom beyond the frictional portion, said brush entering the body of the holder contained therein for cleaning the latter.
5. A receptacle having a form and size adapting it for containing a holder for cigars or cigarettes, a removable cover for said receptacle, said cover having a central teat, a core fixed to said teat, and radial bristles extending from said core.
6. In combination, a cylindrical receptacle, a holder for cigars or cigarettes in said receptacle occupying all but a short space at the open end thereof, a cover for said receptacle having a frictional portion entering said receptacle and occupying said space, and a cylindrical brush extending from said cover into said holder and adapted to clean the same both when the cover is set in place and When it is removed.
7 In combination, a cylindrical receptacle, a holder for cigars or cigarettes in said receptacle and occupying all but a short space at the open end thereof, a cover for said receptacle having a frictional portion entering said receptacle and occupying said space, and a cylindrical. brush extending from said cover and having a Wire exten sion, said brush and extension being adapted to enter the body and stem portions respectively of said holder and clean the same when the cover is set in place and when it is removed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES C. DARST.
