Description
dinard (taira s LOUIS FRHINSFELD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 97,381, dated November 30, 1869.
VIMPRovrm HINGE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same .To all 'whom it 'may concern;
Beit known that I,L0U1s FRHINSFELD, of New- `ark, in the county of Essex, and State of N ew Jersey,
have invented anew and useful Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
' This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in hinges for hanging the covers of trunks and chests, and for all purposes to which the ordinary buthinge is adapted, but which is more especially designed for trunks, and similar articles; and
The invention consists in forming` one siue or. portion of the hinge in the forni of a square or rectangular band, so that the other portion o1 leaf may be left whole its entire width, the 'connection between the two parts being similar to that of a strap attached to a buckle, thereby rendering the hinge far more strong and durable than the ordinary hinge' is.
In the accompanying plate of-drawings Figure 1 represents a top view of a hinge made accoi-ding to my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of fig. 1, through the line x se.
Similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the hinge, which is made i-n ,two parts, B and C.
B is the open part, one side of which forms the jointpin, around which the other part C is turned, as seen in the drawing.
The part G does not dier from the leaf of the or-v dinary hinge, except that it isleft entire its whole width, instead of being cut or bisected, and thereby greatly weakened as they ordinarily are.
. The open part B is provided with a suitable num,
berof screw-holes for fastening'it securely to the trunk or other article, thus forming a hinge of only two pieces ot' metal, of the most durable character, and at a reduced cost, as compared with the common hinge.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, the hingeA, com-- posed of two pieces only, B being cast entire with pintle and screw-bolts, and O of malleable iron, bent around B, all as and for the purpose specified.
L. FRHINSFELD.
