FOLDING CRIB ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.
973,439. Specification of Letters Patent Patented Oct. 18, 1910.
Application filed June 25, 1909, Serial No. 504,934. Renewed July 14, 1910. Serial No. 572,019.
T all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that 1, TnnLLis R. Kniurnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVeldon, in the county of Decatur and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Folding Crib Attachment for Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a neat, strong, foldable crib adapted to be detachably connected with the side of a bed in such a manner that a mother in the bed can readily handle her child in the crib as required in nursing it without herself getting out of her bed and Without exposing herself or the child.
A further object is to fold the crib fiat so it can be moved advantageously from place to place or stored away out of sight under the bed or elsewhere.
My invention consists in the construction and application of a structure as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the crib in position as required to be attached to abed. Fig 2 is an end view that shows an adjustable latch for connecting it with the front rail of a bed. Fig. 3 is a top view that shows the crib connected with a bed in such a manner that a person in the bed has unobstructed access to a child in the crib in such a manner that the child will be in reach to be cared for and lifted to and from the crib.
The numeral designates a. three-sided oblong frame made complete from a single length of a metal rod. The ends 12 are bent down at their free ends to produce hooks 13 adapted to engage the side rail of a bed as shown in Fig. 2. Spring-actuated latches 14 are mounted in bearers 15 under the hooks 13 for detachably fastening the crib to a bed. Atthe corners of the oblong frame 10 are hinged uprights 16 of a frame 17 that extends upward from end to end as the back of the crib that may vary in size as desired and to be folded downward into horizontal position as shown in Fig. 3. To said uprights 16 are hinged ends 18 of the crib that can be folded fiat against the frame 17 or extended at right angles therefrom as shown in Fig. 2. A frame for supporting the removable bottom of the crib is composed of two mating rods 19 that havehooks 20 at their ends to engage the ends of the frame 11) as shown in Fig. 2 and mating rods 21 that have hooks to engage the rods 19 I as shown in Fig. 1. It is obvious a plurality of rods 21 or springsmay be combined with the rods 19 to serve as a bottom for supporting mattress and bed clothing and that a crib bottom thus constructed can readily be separated and folded compactly with the crib to be handled therewith and stored away. Spring-actuated latches 23 are fixed on top of the ends 12 of the frame to engage the free ends of the folding ends 18 to retain them stationary as required when the crib is attached to the front of a bed as shown in Fig. Legs 241 are hinged to the rear corners of the frame 10 for supporting the crib when in use and to be folded Hat with the frame 10 when not in use and legs are detachably connected with the front corners by means of the latches 14 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Having thus set forth the purpose of my invention and the manner of its application and use in combination with a bed the practical operation and utility thereof is obvious.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A crib attachment for beds comprising a U-shaped piece having hooks on the ends of its legs, collapsible legs on the base of said U-shaped piece, an upright frame hinged to the base of said U-shaped piece, end-gates hinged to the upright rods of said frame, the legs of said U-shaped piece being adapted to hook on the side rails of a bed, and spring clasps on the legs of said U- shaped piece for the reception of a horizontal rail of the end-gates and maintenance of the same in position, said clasps being formed from a single piece of resilient metal looped upon the legs of the U-shaped piece one end having an upward and an inward trend and the other leg having an upward and inward concaved trend.
2. A crib attachment for beds comprising a U-shaped piece, hooks on the logs of said U-shaped piece, collapsible legs on the base of said U-shaped piece, a frame hinged to the base of said U-shaped piece, end gates hinged to said frame, clasps for maintaining said end-gates in operative position, said hooks being adapted to clutch the side rail of a bed, and a retractiie catch for preventing upward lift of hooks, said catch comprising spaced depending members integraliy formed on the legs of said U-shaped piece and having registering perforations therein, a rod slidable in said rod and a coiled spring surrounding said rod and 10- euted between the rear one of said depending members and said pin.
