To all whom it may concern.-
Be it .known that I, CHARLES S. HoRwooD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of corset covers, and similar garments, and has for its object toprovide a construction in which the side portions, which are more subject to strain and wear than the front and back portions, shall be double while the front and back portions are single. By this means the garments are reinforced at those points where they are subjected to the most wear and strain, while the labor and cost of constructing double the parts not subjected to so much strain are avoided.
A further object of my invent-ion is to provide means whereby the construction above mentioned may be produced in the initial, operation, thus enabling such a gar ment to be manufactured as easily and cheaply, or nearly so, as the ordinary singleply garment.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a front View of a garment constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing a portion of the outer layer of fabric broken away to disclose an inner layer of fabric.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide front and back portions A A and B B respectively. The two back portions B B are connected together by a middle seam D. Both the front and back pieces are of single-ply material, and the shoulderstraps C C which connect the front and back pieces and are integral therewith are singleply and as narrow as practicable.
The side pieces E E unite the front and back pieces A A and B B, below the shoulder strips or pieces, leaving arm-holes F F; these side pieces are double-ply, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2. The side pieces are attached to the front and back pieces at the seams G G and H H. At the front of the garment, suitable fastening means may be provided, not shown in the drawing.
I am aware that somewhat similar methods to those shown in this specification have been used to strengthen garments heretofore. In such cases, however, the reinforcement has been carried up over the shoulders and around the entire arm-hole. This method has been used in garments designed to carry the weight of underclothing, as hose-supporters, etc. But on garments in which the strain is across the garment instead of downward, and where the primary purpose of the garment is to hold in the figure of the wearer, and particularly to act as a bust-supporter or confiner, and where there is no other clothing attached to or supported by said garment, the reinforcing of the arm-holes is an unnecessary and nude sirable operation and results in an undue and objectionable thickness of material over the shoulder. One of the objects of my invention is to remedy these defects, and provide as thin and narrow a shoulder-strap as is at all practicable, at the same time re ducing the expense of manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
A garment of the kind specified comprising single-ply back pieces B B, secured together by a seam D; single-ply front pieces A A; single-ply shoulder straps G O, connecting said front pieces to said back pieces on each side respectively and being integral therewith; and double-ply side pieces E E located beneath the arm-hole and connected to the said front pieces by seams G G and to said back pieces by seams H H.
