JOSEPH P. WATSON, OF HAZELI-IURST, MISSISSIPPI.
GRATE-BASKET.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. IA'rsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazelhurst, in the county of Copiah and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grate-Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grate baskets and the object of the invention is to construct a grate basket in sections so that the base may be readily removed when burned and replaced by a new base and also providing the upper portion of the grate with a swinging bracket whereby articles may be easily and quickly heated by the fire within the grate.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a grate basket constructed in accordance with my improvement showing the same in applied position within the lire box of a mantel or chimney breast. Fig. 2 is a sectional view upon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the basket separated from the fire box.
In the drawing the numeral l designates the fire box or opening adapted for the reception of the basket. This box 1 communicates with the Hue 2 and has its sides each provided with vertical extending1 members 3. These members 3 are each provided with a pair of spaced projecting portions, designated by the numeral 4 provided with perforations.
The numeral 5 designates the front of the lire basket. This front 5 is constructed of any desired metal and is provided with the usual rearwardly extending offset arms 6 which engage with the openings of the members t. The front of the basket may be of any desired design and one of its end vertical arms has a perforated offset portion 7 which is adapted to receive a pintle 8 pron vided upon the shelf 9. This shelf 9 is constructed of some suitable reticulated metal and is adapted to be swung over the fire within the basket when it is desired to heat articles. The front 5 has its upper portion provided with aplurality of longitudinally Specification of Letters Patent.

extending arms and its lower portion provided with a plurality of vertically extending rods l0 which are adapted to serve as a means for preventing the live coals within the basket dropping upon the floor. The vertical end bars of the face 5 are each provided with alining studs or projections 11 and these projections are adapted for the reception of an offset hook member 12 carried upon the grate or bottom 13 of the basket.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, one wherein the grate member 13 may be readily and easily removed from the face 5 when the said grat-e is worn or broken and one which provides a revoluble shelf which may be eectively employed for heating articles when desired.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
ln combination with an open tire place, of vertically disposed members upon the side walls of the fire place and adjacent the open mouth thereof, said members being provided with perforated projections, a lire basket, said tire basket comprising a front vmember and a grate member, said front member having upright side arms and a plurality of longitudinally spaced connecting bars which are arranged in the same plane with the side arms, the lower connecting bar being provided with a plurality of vertically extending rods, the side arms having their upper portions provided with offsets which are adapted to engage the projections upon the vertical members of the lire place, the front member having its side arms provided with inwardly projecting studs between the lower pair of connecting bars, said grate member comprising a horizontal structure havin@ its forward end, adjacent to its sides, provided with integrally formed Vertical extensions, and said extensions having their extremities provided with offset hooks adapted to engage the studs of the front member.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JOSEPH P. WATSON.
