Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 11 1910.
Application led June 12 1909. Serial No. 501,862.
To all whom 'it may concern:
.Be it known that I, MAX R. SLoUGH, 'a citizen of the United States, -residing at Covina, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Sanitary Covering for Toilet-Seats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to a sanitary vcovering for water-closet seats, and a prime object thereof is to provide a base 4member having a plurality of coverings detachably secured thereto, one of'which may be readily removed therefrom every time that the closet is used, and which are absolutely sanitary, the coverings being so arranged that the ones directly below the u perinost one will not be brought in contact with the body of the person using the closet'.
A further object is to provide acovering that may be readily secured to and removed from a toilet seat and one in which a covering may be detached from the others vin an expeditious manner.
vIn the accomplishment of the above objects I prefera ly employ a base member formed from car -board or other similar material and stamped into lapproximately the general configuration of a toilet-seat. I also provide a plurality of sanitary sheets detachably secured to the base member, provision being made whereby they may be easily detached therefrom. Means are provided to maintain the base member in rigid'relation to the seat, while the same is being used.
I accomplish the above objects by means of the device hereinafter'described and illustrated in tlieaiinexed drawings, inn which Figure lis a plan View of 'a typical water-closet seat with my device secured thereto. Fig. 2- is abottom plan view of the seat shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective sectional detail of a portion of a closet bowl and seat with .my device attached thereto.
In a practical embodiment of my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, 5 designates a closet-bowl of usual construction, pro- -v1ded with a hinged seat 6, the upper face rounding transversely, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. The under face of this seat is4 provided with the usual elastic cushioning devices 7 that serve to raise the seat out of contact with the upper edge of tli'e bowl.
My device, as heretofore stated, consists primarily of a base member 8 formed of a pliablematerial, such as heavy paper, and, stamped bymeans of a die into the contiguration of the upper face of the seat Detachably secured to the upper face of this member are a plurality of covers Q which are preferably formed from thin oiled or paraflin paper, that will prevent the absorption of any moisture., and thereby prevent the communication to the covers directly Vbeneath the uppermost one. These covers are, as has been said before, preferably formed of exceedingly thin paper, so that the maximum number may be secured totlie base member or pad. The `covers are preferably secured to the'pad and to each other by means of an adhesive l0 at various points along its edges, as clearly illustrated in Fig.
2 of the drawings. The purpose of applying the adhesive at certain. points along the edge, i-nstead of applying it to the entire edge as is usual in padding paper, is to render the removal of the'uppermost sheet a` comparatively simpleoperation, jeach Sheet being detached therefrom much more readily than if the ent-ire edges were supplied with the adhesive.v Each s heet is preferably provided with a. tab l1 that is intended to facilitate the removal of the separate sheets from the device, each tab being formed integral with its sheet.
In order to prevent any movement of my device while in place on the seat, I have provided tlie base member 8 with a series of tabs l2 formed of a suitablefabric and provided with a buttonhole 13. These tabs are preferably secured to the member on its inner edge, and are designed to engage buttons or other suitable securing means 14,` which are attached directly and at right angles to the under face. of the toilet-seat, the methods of attachment being clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
It will be apparent from the above description that I .have produced a device which will render completely sanitary public closets, and from which individual sheets or covers may be readily removed therefrom.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
l. A supplementary seat for toilet-seats, comprising in combination a toilet-'seat provided vwith attaching means, a base member provided with a plurality of covers formed from a sanitary material adhesively secured theretoalong their edges, and a plurality of button-holed tabssecured to said base mem-` cured to the under face thereof, a base member formed of a ibrous material and provided With a plurality of sanitary covers secured to the upper face ofthe base member and adhesively secured at a plurality of points. along their edges, and aj lplurality of button-holed tabs secured to said base member, said tabs adapted to engage the pins securedto the under face of the toilet-seat.
3. A supplementary seat for toilet seats, comprising in combination a main toilet seat provided with a plurality of attaching adhesively secured to the base member at a pluralityof points along their edges, and means secured to the base member and adapted -to engage the attaching means secured to the toilet seat, -wherebyr the base member is held in detachable relation' to the seat. f
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 8th day of May, 1909.
