Description

J. I. LEVY.
SANITARY TOILET SEAT COVER.
APPLICATION FI-LED SEPT. 21. 1919.
1,358,222. Patented Nov. 9, 1920i aAu/A/ I ful Sanitary UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH I. LEVY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SANITARY TOILET-SEAT COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
' Application filed September 27, 1919. Serial No. 326,885.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ISAAC LEVY, a citizenof the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania have invented a new and useloilet-Seat Cover, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to antiseptic covers for water closet seats adapted to be carried by persons who have occasion to make use of toilets in public places such as hotels, sa-
loons, restaurants, and so forth, and to be applied to the seats, the purpose being to prevent the contact of the hands as well as of any part'of the person of the user with the permanent closet seat, to the end that diseases transmissible by contact with the seat may be prevented and cleanliness assured.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated an embodiment of myinvention which is at present preferred by me because in practical use it has proved efiicient and because it is both thoroughly sanitary and inexpensive.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a perspective of a toilet seat cover embodying my invention, applied to the seat of a water-closet and in the position which it occupies when ready for use.
Fig. 2 represents a central side, sectional elevation of a typical water-closet with my cover applied,-the view illustrating in full lines the position which the parts occupy when' ready for use, and in dotted lines the position assumed by the seat when sufliciently raised to permit of either the application or the removal of my cover, the section being taken on line 2- 2 Fig. .1.
Fig. 3 represents a perspective of my cover removed from the seat.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the container, or body proper,
. of a typical china or porcelain water-closet or toilet.
2 designates a typicalwooden seat applied to the container in the usual manner by being hinged as at 3 to a frame 1 applied to the back of the structure.
5 designates the usual hinged cover of the container.
-My sanitary or antiseptic toilet seat cover is. made of any suitable, and preferably water-proofed, fabric, such as a treated paper, and it is composed of two sheets of the fabric which I have respectively designated, the upper as 6 and the lower as 7, and which are each fastened together at both of their sides as at 8, by stitching or by gluing or kindred adhesive orother preferred means of fastening, and which are, also, at their rear 01'' back edges9, similarly secured to gether, so that the cover as a whole is a double-faced or double-surfaced article, open at one end,in practice the rear end,and closed at both of the sides and at the front edges.
Each sheet of the cover, and the sheets are preferably of double thickness, is provided with an opening, 10 for the upper sheet and 11 for the lower, the openings being of similar configuration and generally conforming except that they are smaller to the outline of the opening 12, in the seat of the toilet.
These openings aresmaller than the toilet opening, in order,'in the application of the device, to prevent accidental contact of the body of the user with the seat of the closet, all for the purposes referred to, of sanitary protection.
The device is also of such construction that it can be applied and removed without contact of the hands of the user with the seat.
In the making of my cover, and in order to make easier'its ap lication and removal to and from the seat, apply to the two open or unconnectedback edges of both sheets of the cover, what I term pull-pieces or tabs 13 and 14, which are preferably central of the back edges or rear ends of the cover, and also apply similar lateral tabs 15 and 16 to the joined and meeting rear side edges of the said rear ends.
To the united front ends of the sheets, I apply a single tab 17.
Each of the foregoing tabs may either be of the fabric of which the cover as an entirety is composed, or it may be of any other material. It is necessary, however, that the application of each tab should be firm, so that the likelihood of anyone of them being pulled off is small; and they are also each of them preferably flexible with relation to the sheets to which they are applied, for the purpose of making it possible for the user, should he so desire, to roll or fold the cover to carry, without the likelihood of stiff tabs piercing the material of the cover.
In the application of my cover to the seat,as will be clearly understood by reference to the drawings, and particularly to Fig. 2, which illustrates the seat in dotted lines raised into a convenient position for both the application and removal of the cover, the open rear end of the cover is slipped over the front edge of the seat while the seat is in lifted position, by manually grasping the tabs 13 and la -the open end being spread apart so. as to be slippable over the front edge of, the seat, and by pulling the cover so as to force it completely downward and backward to its final position on the seat.
The laterally disposed tabs 15 and 16 may be availed of, to effect the final positioning of the cover when it has been pulled back as far as it will go. The removal of the cover will be by force exerted upon the tab 17 at its closed front end.
I desire to call especial attention to the fact that my novel device in its entirety is at all times as a unit ready for instant application to the seat and that it requires no preliminary attention or manipulation, such as the tearingor cutting out of the material to form the holes 10 and 11, as is disclosed in Patent No.1304511, with which construction I am familiar and from which my present invention is differentiated and it will further be seen that by the provision of the plurality of tabs 13, 14, 15 and 16, it can be readily drawn into position, upon the seat and by the single tab 17 removed therefrom, which features and advantages are not present in the patent aforesaid.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful sanitary toilet seat cover which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention andthe above description, and while Ihave, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that such embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing of an of its advantages.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character stated, upper and lower sheets of material provided with permanent openings therein and havin their side and front contiguous abutting edges secured together and their rear edges disconnected, tabs secured centrally to each of said rear disconnected open edges for opening the device and initially pullingit into position, side tabs secured to the rear outer fastened. together edges for pulling the device farther in position for use and a single front withdrawal tab secured to the front secured together edges for withdraw drawing of the device in position, and a withdrawal tab secured to the front portion of said device for facilitating the with drawal of the device.
