Be it known that I, JOHN FLINDALL, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

This invention relates to foot rests for furniture such as chairs, couches and the like, and has for an objectto provide an improved rest adjustable relative to the article of furniture, and improved means whereby the cover is maintained in a taut position irrespective of the position of the rest.

A further object of the invention is to provide in an article of furniture means whereby the fabric forming the cover of the main part of the furniture extends over and forms the cover of the foot rest without fracture, and with improved means for maintaining the cover upon both the body and the foot rest in taut condition.

With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings -Figure 1 is a longitudinal view of one end of an article of furniture with the foot rest attached, shown with the sides removed and certain parts in section. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the device as seen on arrow 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a det-ail view of the sliding member of the foot rest with the spring adapted to hold the same in taut condition as seen from above with the cover removed.

Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The present invention is applicable to any furniture upon which a foot rest would be desirable and here shown as a chair, couch or the like, having a leg 10 supported upon a caster 11 and with cross pieces 12 supporting springs 13. Above the springs 13 a lilling or stuffing 14 is employed secured at the end to a cross piece 15 disposed in a horizontal position and secured to a brace or cleat 1G.

Upon the legs is hinged a frame 17 the sides of which are provided with outwardly extending flanges 18 and the same is movable upon the pivot 19 and maintained in adjust-ment by means of the rack bar 2O engaging upon the pins 21 or in any approved manner. Upon the top of the frame 17 a board 22 is mounted having clips 23 engaging beneath the flanges 1S so that the board 22 is slidable upon the frame 17.

Upon the board 22 a" stufing or filling 24 is employed and the cover 25 of the article is brought over the end of the stuffing 14 and downwardly over the stuiiing 24 and secured as at 26 to the lower edge of the board 22. A stuffing 27 is preferably inserted between the stuffing 14 and the cover 25, and the cover 25 is held taut upon the body by means of a strip of material 28 sewed or otherwise secured to the vcover 25 as at 29 and with its opposite edge nailed or otherwise secured to the cross piece 15 as at 30.

To maintain the cover upon the foot rest always in taut condition a U-shaped spring 31 is secured to the board 22 at one of its extremities as 32 while its opposite extremity 33 is secured to the cross piece 15. As the foot rest is raised and lowered the board 22 will move slidably up on the frame 17 against the tension of the spring 31 and downwardly upon the frame under the action of such spring.

What I claim is 1. In an article of furniture, a spring seat, an adjustable foot rest hinged to the article and embodying a slidable portion, a fabric covering the seat and unbrokenly continuing to cover the foot rest and secured at its edge to the slidable portion, a strip of material secured to the article and to the fabric and adapted to hold the seat portion of the fabric in position, and means carried by the foot rest adapted to act upon the slidable portion and maintain the fabric taut.

2. In an article of furniture, a spring seat, an adjustable foot rest hinged to the article and embodying a slidable portion, a fabric covering for the seat unbrokenly continuing to cover the foot rest and having its edge secured to the slidable portion, a strip of material secured to the article and to the fabric adjacent the edge of the article and adapted to hold the seat portion of the fabric in position, and means carried by the foot rest adapted to exert tension u on the slidable portion and maintain the abric taut.
