To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Z. MCKIN- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in brushes and has particular reference to a device of that kind adapted to be applied to the sweat band of a hat while the latter is on the head of the wearer so that when it is necessary to remove dust from the hat the brush may be detached from its position on the sweat band when the operation of brushing the hat is performed.
One object of the invention is the provision of a device which will present no bulging appearance when in position on the sweat band nor in any way contact with the head of the wearer of the hat.
A further object is the provision of a hat brush provided with an improved form of clamping means, whereby it may be readily attached to and detached from the sweat band.
WVith these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the in- Vent-ion.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the speeification:Figure 1 is a transverse section of a hat showing my device in end elevation and applied to the sweat band. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the device. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The hat is designated in general by the numeral 5, and the sweat band by the numeral 6. Since these parts form no part of the subject matter of the present invention Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 8, 1910.

The stock of the brush is designated by the numeral 7 and made of wood or other suitable material, being oblong in contour and provided with the usual bristles 8.
What will subsequently be termed a shield is designated by the numeral 9. This member is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent at its longitudinal center so as to be substantially right angular in cross section. The sides of the shield are designated by the numerals 10 and 11 and are designed to bear on the top and one side of the stock.
Clamping members by means of which the device is secured to the hat band perform the additional function of a handle by means of which the brush may be passed back and forth over the hat.
lVhat will subsequently be termed an inner clamping member is preferably formed of a single piece of resilient wire bent into substantially a U-shape the opposite limbs of which are'designated by the numerals 12 and 13 and the cross piece connecting the said limbs by the numeral 14. The terminals of these limbs are insertible through openings formed in the shield and at the juncture of the sides thereof, whereby the said terminals will be arranged between the inner face of the shield and adjacent side of the stock so that when the shield is positioned as shown in the drawings it will operate to hold the said clamping member against displacement.
The outer clamping member is preferably formed of a single piece of'resilient wire bent into substantially a U-shape and considerably larger than the inner clamping member. The opposite limbs of the outer clamping member are designated by the numerals 15 and 16 and the cross piece connecting the said limbs is designated by the numeral 17. The terminals of the limbs 15 and 16 of the outer clamping member are insertible through openings formed in the shield and in alinement for the reception of the limbs 12 and 13 of the inner clamping member. \Vith this construction it is evident that the limbs of both clamping members will be parallel. and arranged in the same plane, with the outer clamping mem ber overlying and spaced from the inner clamping member. The cross pieces 14 and 17 connecting the limbs of the clamping members are preferably arcuate in contour so as to conform to the configuration of the sweat band to which they are applied.
In the application of the device and when it is desired to secure the same to the sweat band the end of the outer or larger clamping member is placed over the inner surface of the sweat band after which the device is moved downwardly until the end of the inner clamping member bears on the edge of the sweat band, after which the said inner clamping member is moved slightly outward whereby an opening is presented for the reception of the edge of the sweat band. The device may be now moved downward for any required distance after which the clamping members are released whereby they clamp the sweat band between them by their own resiliency. By forming the clamping members of different lengths and widths, the inner or shorter clamping member will not bear on the outer or larger clamping member when the device is positioned on the sweat-band, whereby the formation of a bulge on the sweat-band which would decrease the size of the head opening of the hat will be prevented.
From the foregoing, it can be seen I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture and which may be applied to most forms of sweat bands now in use.
I claim A hat brush comprising a stock an angular-shaped shield fixedly secured to one side and the top of said stock, a U-shaped clamping member having the terminals of its opposite ends extending through that side of the shield bearing on the top of the stock and fixedly secured between the opposite side of the shield and adjacent surface of the stock a second U-shaped clamping member of greater length than the first-named clamping member and overlying and spaced from the said first-named clamping member, having the terminals of its opposite limbs fixedly secured between the shield and stock and adjacent to and parallel with the terminals of the first-named member, the structure being such that when the outer ends of said members are sprung in opposite directions an opening will be presented for the side of a sweat-band.
