To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK O. KUoEnA, a citizen of the .United States, residin at Tobias, in the county of Saline and tate of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check or Draft Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention is an improvement in check or draft protectors, and its es ecial object, stated in general terms, compre ends the production of an extremelyv simple and effective device for embossing that portion of a check or draft whereon' the figures indieating the lamount thereof are Written, in such a manner as to prevent alteration of the same.

The invention also comprehends the production of a device of the above mentioned character which may readily be attached to one of the covers of a check or draft book in position to emboss the checks or drafts contained therein, vand which may, with equal readiness, be detached when the checks or drafts have become exhausted and applied to a new book.

Furthermore, the invention resides in the production of a protector, as above described, which will serve to hold a blotter in place against the cover, so that the blotter may be utilized in the ordinary manner after the check or draft has been filled in.

Finally, the invention comprehends the production of a protector which may be constructed so cheaply as to enable it to be either furnished gratis by a bank when an account is opened with the same, or purchased at an extremely low cost.

A structural embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereof:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device per se. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device applied to a check book. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing a check in position to be operated upon. Fig. 4 is a plan view, showing the embossed check.

Reference being had to said drawings, and to the characters marked thereon, A designates in a general manner a check book of the ordinary type, and B the protector designed for attachment thereto.

As shown in Fig. 1, the protector comprises a pair of metallic plates 1 and 2 connected together by al hinge 3, each plate being provided upon its inner face with a die 4 having an embossed working surface 5. These dies may be in the form of separate plates attached to the platesl and 2, or they may be formed integral with said plates, according as may be preferred. The embossings may be likewise of any suitable character; in the present instance, one die is formed with teeth, and the other with registering openings wherein the teeth roject when the two dies are forced toget er, as hereinafter described, the object being to mutilate that portion of the check or draft received therebetween.

The upper plate 1 has a somewhat greater width than t-he lower plate 2, and its side edges are bent laterally inward toward each other, as indicated by the numeral 6, said edges lying in spaced parallel relation to the outer face of plate 1, thereby providing an open-ended pocket 7 through which the vupper cover 8 of book A is adapted to be inserted, as'shown in Fig. 2. This pocket also receives the inner end of a blotter 9 which is arranged against the inner face of said cover, the free or outer portion of the blotter being thus held in position to blot l the cheek vroper when the book is closed. The side e ges of plate 1, after havin first been bent inward, as above describ are then bent in the reverse direction, as indicated by the numeral 10, the spaces between the bent portions 6 and 10 receiving theside edges of a cover 11 of card board, leather, or f other suitable material, which may, if desired, have rinted thereon the names of the depositor, t e bank, or the manufacturer of the device. Illustration of this feature is considered unessential and is, therefore, omitted.

In positioning the device, the outer cover is slipped through the pocket 7 until the lower plate 2 rests upon the stub portion of the checks, the front or outer edge of that plate lying directly adjacent the cut away line of perforations which separates the checks proper and stubs. After a check has been filled in in the ordinary manner, and subsequently blotted, it may be folded backward so as to dispose that portion thereof wherein the figures indicating the amount of the check are Written directly above the working surface of the lower die. The cover of the book is then partially closed, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby bringing the upper die into position directly above the lower die. When this has been done, the upper plate is struck shar ly, thus causing the portion of the check tween the dies to be embossed or scored by the working surfaces thereof (see Fig. 4. Upon opening the book, the embossed c eck may be torn out in the ordinary manner, this operation being facilitated by the weight of the lower plate upon the stub portion of the check, andxby the arrangement of the front edge of said plate directly adjacent the line of perforations. If considered advisable, a ortion of one of the dies may have embosse upon its working surface, in addition lto the scoring,- the words Not over, or some slmilar phrase, the other die having the Same phrase cut.in intaglio upon its working surface.

considered unnecessary, in view of the foregoing, beyond the fact that the embossing may lbe made upon the'check or draft after the same has been detached from the corres onding stub, if such be considered prefera le.

I claim as my invention:

1. A check or dra-ft embossin device comprising a pair of connected dieearing members, one of said members being formed with a pocket through which the cover of a check or draft book 1s adapted to be inserted.

2. An embossing attachment for books having detachable leaves vcomprising a pair of connected die-bearing members, one of said members having its side edges bent inwardly toward eachother and in s aced relation to the body portion thereo to connesses.
