sfratti@ STANLEY H. SIMPSUL?, OF VXNNETKA, LLNOS.
appnanon inea autotei- Be it known that l, STANLEY li. iiurson, a citizen of the United States, and resident ot lVinnetka, in `the county oif Cook and State of illinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in lvlemorandum Books, ot which the following is a iull, clear, concise, and exact descriptionreterence being had to (the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecilication.
My invention contemplatesfthe yprovision ot a memorandum book consisting oi" an improved pad and a novel 'cover in which the pad is inserted.
The memorandum book, as a whole, is extremely durable in construction and is designed to present a pleasing appearance. Both the insert and the `cover `may be economicallv manufactured. The pad and cover are so constructed and arranged that the former is held firmly, but removably, within the latter by reason oit the engagement oi the ends of the pad back with a certain pocket and retaining strip with which the cover is provided. One feature of the present invention is the fact that the aforesaid pocket is provided with a window 'formed by removing from the inner wall or the pocket a portion of the material thereof, which is utilized as the retaining strip.
Other 'features of' my memorandum book will appear as the following detailed .descriptiou progresses. in the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective the device of my invention, the cover being illustrated in open position;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section, the cover being illustrated in closed position;
Figure 3 is an inside view of the cover `in open position, the insert being removed;
Figure 4i illustrates the piece of leather 'from which the body portion oi' the cover is formed; and
Figure 5 illustrates a leather blank from, which the apertured pocket strip and the retaining strip of the cover are formed.
Similar characters ot reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the cover is indicated as a whole at A and the pad is indicated as a whole at B, The cover comprises as its body portion a strip 10 of leather or other similar material, to one end of the inner surface of which is attached a pocket strip 11, which is likewise formed of leather or other similar material. Three edges of the pocket strip are firmly attached to the body strip .10 by stitching 12, which is preferably carried entirely around the body taining strip 13 are formed. It kwill be noted that the blank has the saine dimensions as the pocket strip 11, illustrated in Figure v3). It will be noted that the dotted lines la in Figure 5 circumscribe a portion of theblank which corresponds in its dimensions with the retaining strip 13 of Figure 2. The blank is cut along lines 14E and that portion of the blank which was circumscribed by lines 141-14 is utilized as the retaining strip 13, the outer or marginal portion oit the blank being utilized as the pocket strip 11.
Now let us refer to the insert B. This insert comprises a plurality oil' sheets constituting a pad 15 which is attached by staples 16-16 to the light cardboard insert backstrip 17. The back-strip 17 is of substantially the same width as the pad 15, but the length of the strip 17 is substantially twice that of the pad. rllhe staples 16-16 engage strip 17 at points substantially intermediate its ends. If desired, the several sheets oi, pad 15 are scored, as indicated at 18, to facilitate their detachment from the pad.
In applying the insert to the cover, that end of back-strip 17 which4 lies behind the pad is slipped under retaining strip 13 and the other end of strip 17 is slipped into the pocket afforded by strip 11. The insert is thus held firmly but removably in the cover, the insert back-strip being free to 'old with the cover and to move slightly with respect to the cover under iiexure to prevent buckling.
I may state at this point that the inner face oit that part of the backstrip which lies in the pocket may be provided with calendar indicia or the like, which is visible through the pocket window. If desired, a sheet of Celluloid 19 may be slipped into the pocket, as illustrated. The Celluloid preferably fits snugly within the pocket and requires no stitching. adhesive or the like to hold it in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
p l. In a memorandum book, a body strip adapted to be folded along its transverse centre, a pocket strip applied to the inner surface of an end of said body strip and having its lateral edges and one end stitched to the sides and the outer end ot said body strip, a substantialiy rectanguiar portion cut from the centre of said pocket stripy to torni an opening in said pocket strip, a pad retaining strip formed of the rectangular portion out from thepocket strip and attached acrossthe inner surtace of the body strip near but not at the end opposite that to which the pocket strip is attached, a pad, said pad being attached to a back strip substantially twice as long as said pad and adapted to be approximately at its transverse centre, one end oct said back strip being removably inserted in said pocket strip and provided with inscriptions visible through the rectangular opening'thereoit', and the other end being removably inserted through the retaining strip. l y' mate centre, cutting aI substantially rectanf gular portion from the pocket strip to forni an opening in said pocket strip, attaching said rectangular portion across the inner surface of the body strip near but not at the end opposite that to which the pocket strip is attached to form a retaining strip, pio vidingr a pad having a back strip ot substantially twice the length oi the pad, said back strip having approximately one half its length in contact with the pad and adapted to fold at t-he centre, removably inserting an end of said back strip in said pocket strip and the other end through said pad retaining strip, inscriptions being provided on the inner surface of the end of said back strip, and said inscriptions being visible through the rectangular opening ot said pocket strip. In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 28th day of October, 1921.
STANLEY H. SIMPSON. Vitnesses:
